Disney is keeping Black Panther composer Ludwig Göransson in the family by hiring him for The Mandalorian. Lucasfilm is currently developing multiple live-action Star Wars TV series that'll exclusively debut on Disney's streaming service. The first of the projects will be Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian.

The series will be the first live-action TV show set in the galaxy far, far away, and details on it have slowly become official. It's set a few years after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and several before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After letting the rumor mill reveal quite a few important pieces of information, Lucasfilm eventually confirmed the Mandalorian-focused nature of the series and that Pedro Pascal would play the man under the helmet. A few other stars like Gina Carano and Nick Nolte also joined the cast recently, but now the series' crew is starting to fill out even more.

Lucasfilm officially announced on StarWars.com today that Black Panther's Ludwig Göransson will be the composer of The Mandalorian. He's fresh off getting Grammy and Golden Globe nominations for his work on the MCU blockbuster. Göransson is also known for his scores on both Creed movies, and also doubled-down on Marvel content this year with Venom. Here's what he had to say about joining:

Words fail to express how surreal and humbling it feels to be invited into the Star Wars universe. I am deeply grateful to Jon Favreau and Disney for this opportunity and to John Williams for raising the bar so high with his iconic, intrepid scores — they will never be matched. In these next months I hope to honor the tradition of Star Wars’ musical landscape while propelling The Mandalorian into new and unchartered territory. And I will try to remember that there is no try.

Göransson will now become the fifth composer to follow in the footsteps of John Williams' iconic work with the franchise. Williams has done all eight of the main saga films, with Michael Giacchino (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and John Powell (Solo) being the only others to compose music for live-action content. In animation, Kevin Kiner took command of the music in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, while Michael Tavera is scoring Star Wars Resistance.

Göransson brings a unique style to his work and will hopefully be able to riff on Williams' pre-established tunes while also creating some potentially iconic pieces of music himself. Even though this will be Göransson's first time diving into the Star Wars world to create music, he does have a pre-existing connection to the franchise. Donald Glover recently portrayed a young Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Göransson is a frequent collaborator with Glover on his Childish Gambino music. In fact, they also received three Grammy nominations this year for their latest efforts, so the timing of this announcement couldn't be any better.
