Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Episode 7 of The Mandalorian, "The Reckoning."

-

Baby Yoda once again taps into the Force in the newest episode of The Mandalorian to utilize a Star Wars Legends Force power for the first time in current canon. The mysteries about who or what Baby Yoda actually is are thick as ever leading into next week's finale episode, but it's more than clear that he's extremely powerful and very valuable to some bad people.

Baby Yoda (or, "The Child," but nobody actually calls him that) first teased a healing power in the second episode before we even knew for sure he was capable of using the Force. He approached an injured Mandalorian and stretched out his hand as the music started to swell and... nothing happened. It was only a few minutes later in the show's runtime that he would remove all doubt about his abilities by lifting a charging mudhorn, saving The Mandalorian and giving him a clean kill shot.

Episode 7, "The Reckoning" presents a somewhat similar, but more dire scenario to the first healing tease 5 episode ago. After The Mandalorian, Cara Dune, Kuiil, and Baby Yoda meet up with Greef Karga and some henchmen in a plot to hopefully kill the Imperial client, their camp is attacked by large flying creatures with sharp, poisonous claws. Karga gets a terrible slash to his arm and it seems like things are about to end for him when Baby Yoda places his hand on the wound and the gashes close up and the poison dissipates as Karga is healed and Baby Yoda passes out again.

While using the Force for healing doesn't seem outside of the realm of possibility, current Star Wars canon has actually never featured it to this extent. Even the Jedi Temple on Coruscant has a med bay staffed by experienced Force users where patients' physical wounds are treated by traditional medical means.

One of the more intriguing aspects of this skill is also the implications on Baby Yoda's Force mastery. Lifting the mudhorn was a relatively basic idea and was easy to understand - it was reflexive and he was just trying to help his friend. Earlier in this episode, he Force choked Cara Dune when he thought she was fighting The Mandalorian, which also seems reflexive. This seems like a much more advanced power, though, and it's doubtful Baby Yoda actually knows what he's doing.

As the Force is typically described in modern canon, a Force wielder would need to have some knowledge of human biology and the healing process in order to manipulate the cells in the right way to encourage their healing process. Baby Yoda likely doesn't have that particular knowledge, meaning his use of Force powers may be more akin to baby Jack-Jack in The Incredibles - a mental image the internet is sure to eat up.

Naturally, this power makes Baby Yoda a major wildcard. What will he do next? Take out all the Death Troopers with Force lightning? Mind trick Moff Gideon into letting them all go? His powers seem both random but relevant, and always very powerful. The mystery of what he is or where he came from is still a primary question for the show, and his abilities only make audiences more curious.
