When Luke Skywalker and Han Solo first met, they didn’t get along. Luke thought that Han was an abrasive jerk and Han thought that Luke was a goody two-shoes and a religious zealot. However, over the course of their intergalactic adventures together, they became the best of friends.

It’s a shame that J.J. Abrams held off Luke’s introduction until the end of The Force Awakens, after Han’s death, because it meant that this duo never got to share any moments outside the original trilogy. But luckily for Star Wars fans, there are still plenty of iconic ones to choose from.

The First Meeting

Luke first meets Han when he leaves his cushy moisture farm and enters a world that’s unfamiliar to him. Ben Kenobi takes him into the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Mos Eisley Spaceport to find a pilot who can take them to Alderaan.

In the local cantina, after Luke is almost killed by a couple of troublemakers, they meet Han and Chewie, and there’s a hilarious culture clash between the two very different duos.

Debating The Force

After Ben Kenobi hires Han and Chewie to take him and Luke to Alderaan, albeit ending up on the Death Star when Alderaan turns out to have been destroyed, Han and Luke engage in a fervent discussion about the validity of the Force.

While Luke stands by the myths about the Force, Han counters, “Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.”

Dressing Up In Stormtrooper Armor

When the Falcon lands on the Death Star, the guys hide in one of the secret compartments that Han uses to smuggle things, although he never expected to be smuggling himself.

As Stormtroopers board the ship, they knock them out and Han and Luke dress up in their armor. They pretend that Chewie is their prisoner to infiltrate the station.

“Great, Kid! Don’t Get Cocky!”

Han Solo piloting the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars

When the Rebels escape from the Death Star in the Millennium Falcon, the Empire sends a fleet of TIE fighters after them. So, Luke and Han head down to the turrets on the underside of the ship and start firing at them.

After Luke shoots down his first TIE fighter, he shouts up to Han that he got one of them and Han shouts back, “Great, kid! Don’t get cocky!”

Han Returns To Help Luke Blow Up The Death Star

The Death Star explosion in Return of the Jedi

Luke is disappointed when Han takes his reward for saving Princess Leia and leaves without sticking around to help with the Rebellion’s operation to blow up the Death Star. However, Luke’s influence finally sets in as Han returns to help him during the trench run.

Han’s contributions are integral, as he shoots the TIE fighters off Luke’s tail and allows him to get to the air shaft that leads right to the superweapon’s core.

The Royal Award Ceremony

C-3PO, R2-D2, Luke Skywalker, Princess Lei, Han Solo, Chewbacca attend the medal ceremony in Star Wars: A New Hope

At the end of the original Star Wars movie, Luke, Han, and Chewbacca are all honored for their bravery in the destruction of the Death Star. There’s a lavish ceremony in which Leia hands out medals.

Chewie doesn’t get a medal, which was explained outside the movies as a cultural thing for Wookiees, but Luke and Han both get one.

Han Cuts Open A Tauntaun To Keep Luke Alive

Han cuts open a tauntaun

At the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke hasn’t returned to the Rebels’ base on time, Han worries that he’s been injured and rides a tauntaun out into the snowy plains of Hoth to find him.

As soon as Han finds Luke, his tauntaun dies, so he uses Luke’s lightsaber to cut open the corpse to keep Luke alive throughout the night. This is a touching sign of how close they’ve become in the years between the two movies.

Han Checks In On Luke’s Recovery

After they’re spotted by a couple of snowspeeders on a morning patrol, Luke and Han are brought back to the Rebels’ base on Hoth, where Luke begins the road to recovery after spending a night inside a tauntaun.

Han checks in on Luke’s recovery and tells him he looks “strong enough to pull the ears off a gundark.”

“Together Again, Huh?”

Han Solo and Luke Skywalker are captured in Jabba's palace in Star Wars Return of the Jedi.

After all the Rebels head to Jabba the Hutt’s palace to save Han from being a wall decoration frozen in carbonite, they all fail miserably. Before being taken out to the Sarlacc Pit to be sacrificed, they’re all lumped together in the palace.

Luke and Han have a hysterical back-and-forth to mark the first time they’ve seen each other in a long time. Han quips, “Together again, huh?” Luke says, “Wouldn’t miss it.” Han asks, “How’re we doin’?” Luke replies, “Same as always,” and Han jokes, “That bad, huh?”

Celebrating With The Ewoks

The party on Endor at the end of Return of the Jedi

In the final battle of Return of the Jedi, Han and the Rebels manage to take out the shield generator, allowing Lando to blow up the new Death Star, and Luke teams up with his redeemed father Darth Vader to defeat Palpatine, ending the rule of both the Empire and the Sith and bringing peace to the galaxy.

Luke joins his friends down on the forest moon of Endor and, after cremating his dad, parties with them to celebrate the Rebellion’s victory.
