Warning: mild spoilers for Star Wars #12!

While the two wouldn't work together for many years, Princess Leia's bond with Resistance pilot Poe Dameron actually began during the events of the original trilogy of Star Wars films. Both of Poe's parents were major parts of the Rebel Alliance, and they grew to become trusted allies of Leia, Luke and Han Solo throughout the Galactic Civil War and into the days of the New Republic. A new preview for Star Wars #12 reveals the moment Leia first became truly aware of Poe, recognizing him as a similar spirit to Han, who she's still hoping to rescue from the clutches of Boba Fett and Jabba the Hutt in the days after The Empire Strikes Back.

The parents of Poe Dameron are both extremely capable and valuable members of the Rebel Alliance. Poe's mother Shara is one of the Alliance's best A-Wing pilots, and she's recently become a part of the new Starlight Squadron, tasked with finding the other scattered Rebel cells after the Battle of Hoth to give them newly encrypted transmission codes. Meanwhile, Poe's father Kes is a member of the Rebel's elite ground unit known as the Pathfinders, who recently returned from the heart of the Empire to acquire the droid relic needed to create the codes in the first place.

However, Starlight Squadron recently got caught in an Imperial assault, and Shara has been captured aboard one of the Empire's Star Destroyers, leaving Kes extremely worried for her safety. Now, the preview for Star Wars #12 from Charles Soule with art by Ramon Rosanas sees Kes showing Princess Leia holo images of his and Shara's son Poe, and it looks as though Leia sees something in the young boy that fans know will manifest by the time of the sequel trilogy when Poe himself will be under Leia's command. Here are the preview images and synopsis from Marvel Comics:

Kes calling his son Poe a "beautiful disaster" definitely strikes a chord for Leia, as it's likewise a fitting description for the equally chaotic and charismatic Han Solo. Leia is determined to get Han back, especially considering the fact that Leia confessed her love to Han during the final scene of The Empire Strikes Back, right before he was frozen in carbonite and taken away from her. Likewise, Kes is just as desperate to get Shara back from the Empire, and the two Rebel heroes share a kinship and bond together that will one day continue with Kes and Shara's son and his own bond with the then General Organa.

While it's seemingly a small moment featured in this new preview, it's a rather significant one as it's the beginning of Leia's connection with and trust in Poe Dameron, which started with his equally brave and heroic parents. The synopsis also promises that when it releases March 10, the issue will reveal how Poe's parents met, as well as new information about Han's time with the Rebel Alliance. Regardless, here's hoping Kes will find a way back to his wife in Marvel's Star Wars, just as Princess Leia will one day make her way back to Han in Return of the Jedi.
