The Star Wars hero Leia Organa was not only the Princess of Alderaan and one of the Rebel Alliance’s greatest leaders, but she was also a trained Jedi with pupils of her own. As the daughter of Anakin Skywalker, a famously powerful Force user and, the prophesized “Chosen One,” Leia and her brother Luke inherited a potent intrinsic connection to the Force. Combined with a naturally high aptitude for leadership and combat, Leia becoming a Jedi was inevitable.

Like other powerful Force users, such as Luke, many of Leia’s first uses of the Force occurred well before she received any formal training. In The Empire Strikes Back, Leia received and understood a telepathic call for help from Luke, and she later sensed his safety at the end of the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi. Once trained, Leia regularly made incredible use of her Force powers. In canon’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Leia reached out to her fallen son, Ben (aka Kylo Ren), helping him finally reject the dark side. In Legends, Leia used the Force to hold the Millennium Falcon together as it reentered the atmosphere of Coruscant, preventing the careering vessel from breaking apart.

As a fully trained Jedi, Leia was also highly skilled in lightsaber combat. Based on two of her mentors in Legends and her one instructor in canon, Leia most likely was a practitioner of Form V (aka Djem So), the same fighting style used by her brother, Luke, and her father, Anakin. Form V combines fast, relentless, strikes with footwork and wide swings geared towards strength, having been inspired by the real-world fighting styles of fencing, longsword fighting, and kendo. In both continuities, Leia constructs a lightsaber for herself, completing a vital rite of passage as a Jedi.

Luke Skywalker

Luke and Leia Star Wars Rise of Skywalker Jedi Training Flashback

Heeding Yoda’s advice at the end of Return of the Jedi, Luke passed on what he’d learned and trained Leia as one of the first of his new generation of Jedi. In Legends, some of the most prominent stories in which Luke trained Leia were the Thrawn Trilogy of novels and the Dark Empire comic series. As one of the galaxy’s most talented Form V users, Luke almost certainly trained Leia in the form’s use. In addition to lightsaber combat, Luke also trained Leia in telekinesis and the potent and difficult ability of Battle Meditation, in which a Force user (or dark side practitioner) bolsters the skills and powers of their allies, increasing their probability of victory in battle.

In canon, Luke began training Leia shortly after the Battle of Endor. As shown in a flashback sequence in The Rise of Skywalker, Leia was so skilled in lightsaber combat, that she could best her brother in a sparring match. Like in Legends, the canon version of Leia was most likely a master of Form V, with quick and powerful strikes that alternated between one and two-handed swings, like Anakin during the Clone Wars. Leia, unfortunately, didn’t put her training to use very often, as she had a vision of her son dying at the end of her Jedi path, and she chose her family over the prospect of being a Jedi.

Vima-Da-Boda

Vima-Da-Boda Star Wars

In the Legends timeline, Vima-Da-Boda was the latest in a bloodline of Jedi women that began with the legendary Jedi Knight Nomi Sunrider over 4000 years before the saga films. A survivor of Order 66, Vima lived on the streets of Nar Shaddaa, seen by locals as a senile vagrant. During the events of Dark Empire, Vima felt the incredible Force power of Leia while the latter was on a mission to Nar Shaddaa. Inspired back into Jedi Knighthood, Vima gifted Leia her 10,000-year-old lightsaber and later trained Leia in advanced uses of the Force. Thanks to Vima, Leia became skilled enough to hold back the dark powers of Palpatine himself, protecting her son, Anakin Solo.

Saba Sebatyne

Saba Sebatyne

A powerful member of Luke Skywalker’s New Jedi Order in the Legends continuity, the Barabel Saba Sebatyne was a Jedi Master and veteran of the Yuuzhan Vong War. A particularly formidable swordswoman and a member of the order’s High Council, Saba began training Leia during the Dark Nest Crisis. Under Sebatyne’s tutelage, Leia fully embraced her role as a Jedi, honing her lightsaber skills and Force powers to their peak. At her full potential, Leia could entrance trained Force users, such as Alema Rar, and overpower Tahiri Veila, a former Jedi who became a Sith in Lumiya’s order, in a lightsaber duel. Saba Sebatyne's fighting style closely resembles Form V, further proving that this was likely Leia’s fighting style as well.

Rey

Leia hugs Rey in Star Wars

The Force-sensitive Resistance fighter and granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, Rey received her first formal Jedi lessons from Leia, following the Battle of Crait. In and around the Resistance base on Ajan Kloss, Leia tutored Rey in using the Force, lightsaber combat, and training drills within a makeshift obstacle course. Although Rey's Jedi training was brief, she honed her skills and soon became worthy of being called a Jedi Knight. On Kef Bir, Rey managed to duel against the well-trained and deadly Knight of Ren, Kylo Ren on equal footing Thanks to Leia’s tutelage and Force-powered assistance, Rey defeated Ren, but helped him renounce the dark side rather than killing him.

Allana Solo

Allana Solo

Although bloodlines aren’t as important to either Star Wars continuity as many believe, Leia’s granddaughter, Allana Solo, inherited powerful Force potential from both sides of her family. As the descendant of Leia and the Dathomir Witch Teneniel Djo, Allana had an unsurprisingly strong connection to the Force. After her father, Jacen Solo became the Sith Lord Darth Caedus and was eventually killed by her aunt, Jaina, Allana was kept safe from the Jedi’s enemies through an assumed identity: Amelia. During this time, “Amelia” was trained by Leia in the ways of the Jedi, becoming her only apprentice in the Legends continuity. The results of her training under Leia were never fully explored, due to Legends becoming an alternate Star Wars continuity in 2014, but Allana likely grew up to be a formidable Jedi, thanks to Jedi Master Leia Organa Solo.
