Disney+'s upcoming Lego Star Wars Holiday Special gets a new poster that makes fun of Luke Skywalker's severed hand. The original Star Wars Holiday Special is a thing of legend at this point, a piece of media fans still cannot get their hands on (but can watch on YouTube). In 1978, the Star Wars Holiday Special was broadcast on CBS with the intention of capitalizing on the growing popularity of the sci-fi franchise. It was set after the first film and before The Empire Strikes Back, and it centered on the Wookie holiday Life Day. Most amazingly, the Star Wars Holiday Special featured original actors Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford.
The Star Wars Holiday Special was greeted with an extremely negative response from fans and even those who appeared in it, including Hamill. However, 2020 is evidently the year Star Wars' holiday festivities aim for redemption. In August, Disney+ announced it would release a new Star Wars Holiday Special on November 17. This time around, it'll be in Lego form, and it'll be set after Disney's sequel trilogy. The story will find Rey traveling back in time to various vital moments within Star Wars history, allowing for many familiar characters to make appearances.
Disney+ is ready to start promoting its new Star Wars Holiday Special, as shown through the release of this cheeky new poster. Featuring a single, dismembered Lego hand wrapped in a bow, the poster reads, "To: Luke, From: Your Father," referencing the hand Luke lost in The Empire Strikes Back. It's a funny way of presenting that particular event, and one that might hint at the tone the holiday special intends to strike. Check it out down below.
As mentioned before, the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special will see Rey go back in time to different moments within the franchise, and it seems likely that she'll be revisiting when Luke loses his hand. Of course, it already seemed certain that she would stop there, as it's also the scene where Luke discovers Darth Vader is his father. How Rey will interact with and view the past remains to be seen, but it could make for some funny moments.
The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special will also feature the likes of Finn, Poe Dameron, and Rose Tico, though at the current moment, it looks like only Rose will be voiced by her original actress, Kelly Marie Tran. This makes sense, seeing as Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac have all indicated they're ready to move beyond the Star Wars franchise. Nevertheless, it'll be fun to see their characters return and get a glimpse of where they're at post-The Rise of Skywalker. While the bar is arguably already pretty low, hopefully the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special will redeem what came before and offer a new yearly tradition for fans.
