The Star Wars: The Last Jedi novelization actually seems to hint that the attraction between Kylo Ren and Rey is actually canon.
Romance is often in the eye of the beholder, and the Internet is filled with fans who love to ‘ship different characters. One of the more curious Star Wars ships is “Reylo,” the idea that the hero Rey and the villain Kylo Ren are actually attracted to one another. It’s an amusing concept, and The Last Jedi seemed to be ambiguous about it. Now, however, there are rumors the novelization of The Last Jedi will go a step further.
The key difference between a film and a novelization is that a skilled writer can get inside the characters’ heads. That’s even more intriguing when two of the characters share a Force-bond, and are freely dipping into one another’s minds. Some lucky fans have obtained an advance copy of the novelization of The Last Jedi, and they seem to believe the book indicates there are sparks between Kylo Ren and Rey (hat tip Star Wars Stuff).

It’s certainly an intriguing scene, with Rey sensing that Kylo Ren’s “churning emotions” are about her as well as about himself. This scene happens immediately before Ren asks Rey to join him. It suggests he may have meant as more than just allies; alternatively, it’s also possible Rey is misreading him, and she’s sensing his decision to overthrow Snoke. The movie itself was subtly ambiguous when it came to this prospective relationship, so it’s possible Fry has taken things a step further. Lucasfilm has actually taken the unusual step of describing the novelization as an “extended edition;” that’s because it includes so much content that wasn’t in the theatrical cut. Author Jason Fry certainly has the opportunity to explore the relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey in far greater detail.
Star Wars, of course, has a history of difficult – and even tragic – romances. If Kylo Ren really is attempting to woo Rey, his style is even clunkier than his grandfather’s. The reality is that The Last Jedi ended with these two Force-wielders finding a place of balance, each committed to a different side of the Force. Kylo Ren is now seated on the throne of the First Order, master of the dark side of the Force. Rey, on the other hand, is now his deadliest enemy; she is a would-be Jedi who will champion the cause of the light. Luke may have been able to redeem his father, but it seems unlikely that redemption is in store for Kylo Ren. Besides, the quote suggests Rey senses Kylo Ren’s conflict; it doesn’t necessarily imply that his feelings were returned.
Alas, if this quote really does imply a romance between Kylo Ren and Rey, it suggests poor Kylo is about to get his heart broken.
