Star Wars: The Last Jedi star Andy Serkis is teasing his character, Supreme Leader Snoke, has his eyes fixed on Rey as the Skywalker saga continues. Established as the sequel trilogy's big bad a la Emperor Palpatine in the originals, Snoke has quite a fascinating relationship with Kylo Ren. Seducing the former Ben Solo to the dark side, Snoke obviously had grand plans for his troubled apprentice, but the emergence of a certain scavenger from Jakku may alter what Snoke has in mind. In The Force Awakens, he took interest in Rey's Force abilities - especially after she was able to resist Kylo's interrogation methods.
Snoke's desire to train Rey over Kylo may be even greater in The Last Jedi following what transpired on Starkiller base in Episode VII, when the former bested the latter in a lightsaber duel. Time will tell if Snoke's will eventually place his sights on Rey, but fans theorizing this is the way things will go could be close to putting the pieces together with a couple of months to spare.
In an interview with IGN to promote his directorial effort Breathe, Serkis was of course asked about the galaxy far, far away. Among the topics covered included the actor's reaction to the recently released theatrical trailer and working with Rian Johnson, but his comments about a possible Snoke/Rey dynamic are the most intriguing:
"Oh man, that’s so confidential I can’t possibly talk about it. I’m sorry [Laughs], I would love to tell you…. All I can is you’re onto something."
In the Star Wars films, dark side masters have long coveted other - potentially more powerful - apprentices than the one they currently have. Palpatine was actively recruiting Anakin Skywalker while using Count Dooku as a placeholder and later asked Luke Skywalker to "take your father's place at my side" while Darth Vader was in the room with them. It would appear Snoke has something similar in store, considering Serkis' quote. The trailer begins with voice over from Snoke talking about a trainee's raw, untamed power - though it's unknown if this is in reference to Kylo Ren or Rey. Towards the end of the preview, a scene seemed to depict a Rey vs. Snoke showdown (which wasn't going well for our heroine), so the two could cross paths at some point in The Last Jedi. If Luke turns his back on Rey, she will be looking for anyone who can offer their help as she searches for her place in the universe.
Even though Snoke wants to complete Kylo Ren's training, there is mounting evidence he is about to turn his back on his one-time prized pupil. Dialogue revealed from a Snoke Last Jedi action figure included the line, "Your emotions have made you weak," which is possibly a taunt directed to Kylo Ren. We all know Kylo struggles mightily between the light and the dark, with the prospect of killing General Leia Organa in a space battle enough to push him to the edge. Much like Vader's love for Luke, Snoke could see Kylo Ren's familial connections as a hinderance and turn his attention to someone whose parents are less important then she thinks.
