The discussion about Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi continues with fans starting a petition urging Lucasfilm to cut it from Star Wars canon entirely. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been at the center of a storm of controversies that have seen the latest installment of the Star Wars franchise become a divisive topic for many fans with this petition being the latest effort to register fans' objections with Disney and Lucasfilm.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi focuses on the adventures of Rey, the force sensitive scavenger, Finn, the former stormtrooper turned Rebel hero, and Poe Dameron, the hot-shot Rebel pilot with a family history stemming from the Rebellion. The film (read our review) also saw the resolution of several characters' storylines from the original franchise including Han Solo's death in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Star Wars: The Last Jedi saw the conclusion of Luke Skywalker's story which is the primary focus of the petition.
The petition started by Henry Walsh cites that after the death of Han Solo fans saw "less than a minute" of Luke Skywalker, and claims that after wiping over 260 stories from the Star Wars universe, Disney and Johnson have destroyed the things that "fans love the most about Star Wars" by failing to give Luke Skywalker and the Jedi a fitting end. Currently, at over 5,000 signatures, the petition claims that since Disney erased the Extended Universe canon from Star Wars, they should push back episode IX and remake VIII to allow fans to keep their heroes.
The divisive nature of the film can't be understated. After Star Wars: The Last Jedi received a lower audience score than the prequel series and word began to circulate that the Rotten Tomatoes score may not be genuine, people clearly have strong feelings. While Disney did remove the extended universe canon showing Luke rebuilding the Jedi order, the brand still exists under the Star Wars Legends label. The over 260 novels cited by the petition that contain Luke rebuilding the Jedi order still exist, they're just no longer tied to the films and television shows.
With Disney planning on launching newer novels addressing the characters in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the company is clearly planning to offer their own take on Star Wars. Mara Jade, the students at Luke's school, and even Leia and Han's three children Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin Solo are still around for people to appreciate as Star Wars Legends. Disney however clearly has to make some decisions regarding the story that it wants to tell and just how to reach the fans of the beloved series. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is currently in theaters.
