An impressive fan-made video about Luke Skywalker's life as a Jedi pays tribute to the character's legacy. With the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars film this week, fans have had a chance to reflect on the film saga that's brought them joy through eight movies and much more material besides.
The highlight of the celebrations was undoubtedly the Vanity Fair cover story for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, giving fans lots of reveals about the next film in the series, but there was also plenty of coverage in the past week chronicling the impactful past of the series.
A particular highlight is a stunningly produced 9-minute fan video by Heroes Fan Productions that chronicles the story of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Starting out with footage from the climactic scene introducing Luke in The Force Awakens – a close-up of the profile of the exiled Jedi after he was finally located by Rey (Daisy Ridley) on Ahch-To – the video serves as a meditation for Luke with echoed narration and dream-like music as he contemplates key moments and figures in his life. Check out above.
In carefully constructed moments of recollection, not only do you see Luke's journey told through clips of the original trilogy, but get pivotal moments and characters from nearly all the other films in the saga (including Rogue One and a snippet from The Last Jedi trailer) with looks at the lives of Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia and Anakin Skywalker aka Darth Vader. The whole thing comes together to make clear that none other than Luke is "The Last Jedi" of Episode VIII's title.
Surprisingly absent from the footage are any clips of Jake Lloyd as the young Anakin from The Phantom Menace, which may be the video's only creative flaw (even footage of Yoda from TV's Star Wars: The Clone Wars is included). No matter how Star Wars fans feel about the oft-maligned first film in the prequel trilogy, Lloyd's Anakin is still important to the telling of the overall saga and he deserves at the very least, a brief acknowledgment.
Creative missives aside, there's no question that an incredibly impressive tribute that encapsulates the conflicted life of one of the most recognized characters in movie history; it gives fans a look at the complex thoughts going through Luke's mind at the conclusion of The Force Awakens and gets them ready for the next step of his journey.
