Kylo Ren is getting a brand new Hot Toys figure next year in honor of the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Adam Driver reprises his role as the master of the Knights of Ren on the heels of becoming one of the standout stars of The Force Awakens. This time, he sports a fresh facial scar that he got while fighting Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega) at the end of the previous film, and the merchandise so far has reflected his disfigurement.
Supreme Leader Snoke’s ruthless, intense apprentice has already popped up in previous toy releases to promote the sequel, including a LEGO set that hints at a showdown with his former Jedi master, Luke Skywalker. Kylo also appeared in the first wave of official Last Jedi toys back in July. He made his Hot Toys debut as one of the manufacturer’s signature highly-detailed figures in 2015, ahead of the release of The Force Awakens – and now he’s gotten an update for the follow-up.
The Hot Toys official website has revealed its newest Kylo Ren creation – a brand-new 1/6-scale figurine with a head sculpt sporting the character’s new scar. The figure features 30 points of articulation, a battery-operated LED light-up lightsaber and a helmet with “weathering effects.” The figure is expected to be released in the second or third quarter of 2018. You can check out several images of the new Kylo Ren figurine in the galley below:
Kylo’s new Hot Toys model also includes seven different hand sculpts. There are a pair of fists, two relaxed hands and two other variations for the purpose of holding his lightsaber. The seventh hand is a “gesturing” piece made for Kylo’s use of the Force. There are subtle but noticeable differences in Kylo’s uniform, including an updated cape and tunic.
Driver has previously said that Kylo Ren will begin The Last Jedi in a “rehabilitation state”, recovering from his humiliating (to him, anyway) defeat at Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens. He’s also teased “unexpected” events in the next Star Wars movie, which some fans speculate could involve Ren switching sides and giving in to the pulls of the light side. What’s clear is that Kylo will be dealing with even more internal struggles this time around, and it’s part of the reason why director Rian Johnson has described the character as being surprisingly relatable.
This new Hot Toys figure doesn’t give away anything groundbreaking about Kylo Ren, other than the fact that he still has his helmet. His scar looms large as one of the figure’s unique markings, a symbol that in the film could fuel his budding feud with Rey. Johnson and Disney are clearly betting big on Ren’s continued development as a character, and the ultimate success of The Last Jedi could rest on the shoulders of its wounded villain.
