Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo takes center stage as she gives the Resistance a pep talk in a new image from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The character, played by Laura Dern, is one of three principal newcomers to the sequel trilogy, and in typical Lucasfilm fashion, not much is known about her role in the film other than her association with the heroes of the story. Some of the earliest Episode VIII rumors suggested she is a rival of General Leia Organa and Poe Dameron, but official canon materials have illustrated she was a trusted ally of Leia's during the Galactic Civil War - raising questions about her true nature. Holdo has yet to factor into any of the marketing, save for a couple of glimpses of her costume.
When compared to fellow Star Wars neophytes DJ (Benicio del Toro) and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), Holdo is very much a mystery. She is the only one of the main cast yet to receive any kind of merchandise, meaning Lucasfilm is very much holding her back for the movie's premiere. Now, however, Holdo gets some time to shine thanks to the release of a new photo from The Last Jedi.

John Hoey of Star Wars News Net shared the still on Twitter, mentioning that it originally debuted during Dern's appearance on Ellen. You can watch a clip from the show in the space above, while checking out the photo below:
From the looks of it, this seems to be from the obligatory "Rebellion/Resistance briefing scene" that Star Wars is so well known for. Holdo is standing in the middle of the frame as fellow Resistance members, including a BB unit, look on. Based on the interior of the base, this could be when the group makes its way to Crait and is preparing for a battle against First Order forces. We know that in the beginning of The Last Jedi, the Resistance is forced out of their old headquarters on D'Qar and take refuge on the salt mine world, which was the site of an old Rebel outpost. It may be a little surprising to not see Leia speaking to the troops, but as a Vice Admiral, Holdo is in a key leadership position and would definitely have some valuable words of advice before a fight.
In her interview on Ellen, Dern obviously could not reveal too much about Episode VIII, but she did confirm Holdo uses a blaster at some point in the film, meaning the admiral gets involved in the action herself. Dern shared an amusing anecdote of her becoming the latest Star Wars actor to make weaponry sound effects while filming, doing her own blaster noises during what surely is an intense sequence. The Jurassic Park star had the time of her life on the set, and hopefully that translates into a memorable character. With Leia's Episode IX role up in the air following Carrie Fisher's untimely passing, Holdo could move into a more prominent position for the finale - considering she survives Crait, of course.
