An upcoming comic book will reveal the backstory behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi character DJ, played by Benicio del Toro. The Star Wars franchise has always been about the battle between good and evil. The movies acknowledge the relationship between the light and the dark, and the stories are often about the characters choosing one side or the other. But in The Last Jedi the character of DJ was introduced, and he might actually fall somewhere in the middle.

So far, audiences do not know very much about DJ. He's a self-proclaimed code breaker who Finn, Rose, and BB-8 meet on Canto Bight - in jail no less. He makes it clear from the start that he is a selfish person who will help anyone for a price, including both the rebellion and The First Order. There are moments when DJ reveals a potentially kind heart, such as when he returned Rose's necklace to her. And moments where he seems heartless, such as when he convinced Rose to give up the necklace in the first place. He advises Finn not to take a side in the war, simply to take care of himself. And of course, when captured by The First Order, DJ willingly sacrifices Rose, Finn, and every other rebel in order to survive.

And so far, that is really all that audiences know about the character. Almost nothing about his backstory or who he really is was revealed in the film - not even his name (that came from supplementary info). Audiences are left with only what they saw and what DJ told them. But now the Star Wars Official Site has revealed that a one-shot comic book titled Star Wars: The Last Jedi - DJ #1 will be released on January 31, 2018 that tells DJ's story prior to his incarceration on Canto Bight.

Benicio Del Toro as DJ in Star Wars The Last Jedi

According to co-writer Ben Blacker, the comic will take readers right up to the moment the film introduced DJ and give some insight into his complicated worldview. This is not the first time extra information has been revealed about a Star Wars character in comic books. BB-8's girlfriend, how C-3PO got his red arm, and the story of how Captain Phasma escaped Starkiller Base are all stories left out of the films but told in comic book form.

Since DJ was last seen flying away safely in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it is entirely possible that he could reappear in Star Wars 9. In a story that so often is about characters choosing either the light or the dark, having a character who refuses to make a choice adds quite an interesting twist to the tale. Though if he does return, maybe DJ will finally face a situation where he has to pick a side once and for all.
