Rian Johnson, director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, shared a face-swapped photo of him and Daisy Ridley. The Last Jedi is undoubtedly the most polarizing installment in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. While the critical reaction to Rian Johnson’s sequel was positive, just as it was for The Force Awakens, the reception from fans was divided. The debate around the film, which continues to this day, usually centers on Finn and Rose Tico’s story arcs (or lack thereof), and Luke Skywalker’s fate on Ahch-To.
In November of 2017, a month before The Last Jedi opened in theaters, Lucasfilm announced Johnson would helm a Star Wars trilogy with brand new characters, completely separate from the Skywalker saga. After, The Last Jedi went on to receive a mixed response from fans, calling the director’s future with the franchise into question. This led to rumors Johnson’s trilogy had been canceled, but he recently confirmed it is still happening. However, development has been rather slow because he has been busy with other projects.
Until there is more news on that front, fans will have to be satiated by some throwbacks. Seemingly out of nowhere, Johnson took to Twitter to share a face-swapped photo of him and Daisy Ridley on set of The Last Jedi. The director explains, “My phone decided to remind me that 4 years ago today Daisy and I face-swapped and created the most cursed image of all time.” While Johnson’s claim might be a bit hyperbolic, the image is certainly uncanny and a little terrifying. While face-swaps have been a growing trend as of late, the difference in age and gender makes this one for the books, not to mention that the director’s beard doesn’t swap entirely. Johnson was 43 when this photo was taken, and Ridley 25, giving the photo the paradoxical effect they are both simultaneously young and old.
Since Johnson is currently busy casting Knives Out 2 and preparing to begin filming the highly anticipated sequel soon, it seems his Star Wars trilogy has been put on the back burner. For those eager to see Johnson return to the milieu, he has expressed an interest in directing an episode of The Mandalorian, but scheduling conflicts with Knives Out may prevent him from doing so. Therefore, this “cursed” Last Jedi face-swap with Ridley might be the last Rian Johnson-related Star Wars news there is for a while.
