Leading up to the release of the next chapter in the Star Wars franchise, The Last Jedi, fans were fascinated with the newest trailer for the movie. Filled with shocking scenes and epic fight sequences, the best takeaways for some fans was the fresh batch of new theories based on its content.

Fan theories are nothing new to this fandom. Social media and online communities are packed with such hypotheses for all of the Star Wars movies and Star Wars Expanded Universe. While some theories take shape based on the history of the Star Wars movies (Kylo Ren will lose a hand like Anakin and Luke Skywalker), other arguments have been tied to the smallest detail found in the actual trailers (Finn’s reflection in Captain Phasma’s helmet).

With Disney well aware of the effect these trailers have on Star Wars fans, its marketing team has perfected the art of the misdirect. However, these misleaders have yet to deter fans from speculating on the next movie’s plot twists and the future of the franchise as a whole.

While some theories have already been disproven (sorry guys, but Ezra is not Supreme Leader Snoke), others have remained afloat since the release of The Force Awakens.

Here are Star Wars: 15 Last Jedi Fan Theories So Crazy They Could Be True

Luke will Die in this Movie, becoming the Last Jedi

Star Wars the Last Jedi Luke With Skywalker Lightasber

Since the title of the newest Stars Wars movie was revealed, dedicated fans immediately panicked at hearing the name The Last Jedi. With the introduction of so many new characters and the death of a coveted favorite (we are still not over Han!), fans have speculated that this film will mark the transition from legacy Star Wars to the new generation. Sadly, that would mean the death of Luke Skywalker as well.

Granted, fans tried to hang their hopes on foreign translations of the film’s title where “Jedi” was actually plural. However, we are all too familiar with the unofficial “passing of the torch” sequence from all of the other films: the Jedi in training witnessing their mentor being slaughtered. We have seen Qui-Gon, Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi killed and, in turn, lit a fire in their pupil/replacements’ hearts. Will this constant make it into The Last Jedi?

Boba Fett is still Alive

Boba Fett looks menacingly at the viewer

This particular fan theory has been floating around long before The Last Jedi was announced. Since he fell into the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi, fans have speculated that Boba Fett actually survived. According to Inverse.com, “In 1991, the comic book series Dark Empire made it clear that Fett did not die on Tatooine at all, and was still a formidable Bounty Hunter six years after the Battle of Endor. In that timeline, Fett was hunting Han and Leia for the murder of Jabba the Hutt.”

How does this connect to the latest installment of the Star Wars franchise? A Reddit user shared that “a few leaked images for upcoming 2018 Star Wars toys clearly depict Boba Fett flying out of the Sarlacc Pit, apparently shooting his flame-thrower at it.”

We already know there are talks of his own standalone movie, but where else could he possibly show up? Maybe as a hired hand for Snoke, finally able to take his revenge on Luke Skywalker.

Luke Will Become Evil

One of newest fan theories points to Luke becoming an evil character. Considering all he has been through and witnessed as the Dark Side corrupted his own father, he should not be tempted by it, right?

However, perceptive Star Wars fans have made the connection based on the latest The Last Jedi poster to be released. As we reported earlier this month, “Besides the fact that the poster may have a Darth Vader homage, there’s also a theory going around that because Luke is featured largely on the top towering over the other characters, he is going to be the villain of the story following the pattern of the previous Star Wars posters.”

Even director Rian Johnson and actor Mark Hamill are taking pleasure in reading all of the fan theories and scoping out the fans’ line of thinking. They are secretly laughing at us, but we do not care.

The Dark Past of The Jedi Order Will Be Its Undoing

The Jedi Order from Star Wars.

Fans of the Star Wars franchise have always been intrigued by the concept of the Jedi Order. After the original trilogy, the prequels delved deeper into the lives of young Padawans and Jedi Masters training in Jedi Temples.

We have previously covered how the Jedi have been the real bad guys of the story and given examples of the worst things they have ever done. However, the latest films will delve into even more of the origins of The Jedi Order with the ancient books and the first Jedi Temple on Ahch-To. Fans are now wondering if the uncovered secrets will be heinous enough for Luke to abandon the Jedi Order (thus making him the Last Jedi from a different perspective.

Rey Will Turn to the Dark Side

The temptation of the Dark Side has plagued previous characters that were gifted with the Force. We watched as the innocence of Anakin Skywalker slowly crumble to reveal the darkened heart of Darth Vader. Aware of her incredible power, Kylo Ren determined that he could convert Rey to the Dark Side in The Force Awakens. Interestingly enough, in the newest trailer, we see this conversion could come to pass.

After her tremendous power seemed to frighten Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, Rey appeared to turn to Ren for help with her training. To do this, Rey could, eventually, join forces with Ren. As we pointed out in our article Star Wars: The Last Jedi Trailer #2 Breakdown, “…If you string Rey’s dialogue together from the beginning of the trailer, it appears as if maybe everything she says could belong to this final scene, making her dialogue ‘something inside me has always been there, but now it’s awake and I need help… I need someone to show me my place in all this.'"

There is still the problem of her hating Ren because he killed his own father, though. Alternatively, this could all be the smoke-and-mirrors we are often given in movie trailers to keep fans away from the truth.

Snoke is Anakin’s Father….and Possibly Rey’s Father Too

Supreme Leader Snoke on Starkiller Base in The Force Awakens

While we all watched Anakin grow from a young boy to the villainous Darth Vader, the prequels (as painful as they were to watch) gave us more insight into how the character changed over time. Although we are introduced to his mother, Shmi, in the prequels, little information is revealed about his father (there are hints of an immaculate conception). Rey not only shares the same missing link to her past, but also the potential to be an incredibly powerful Force user.

One theory makes the connection between the two through one source: Snoke. This fan theory states that since Snoke is such an incredible Force user, he (similar to Darth Plagueis) can create “life” by manipulating midichlorians as is thus the "father" of Anakin and Rey. Although Johnson has dismissed the truth of Rey’s parents to be significant to the overall story, this theory may still hold weight down the line.

Poe May Turn to the Dark Side

Much speculation has been placed on the possibility of Luke or Rey turning to the Dark Side but what about other characters? Poe Dameron’s place in The Last Jedi will be expanding enough to cause concern for both the First Order and The Resistance. As we reported earlier this month, rhe official Japanese Star Wars website gave the following description of his character: “Now that the conflict between the First Order and the Resistance has escalated into total war, Poe is a shining as a leader of a courageous flying battalion. But, while he is brave and a skilled pilot, both the First Order and the Resistance alike are starting to fear his dedication to the war effort.” His focus to “burn the First Order” down could lead to some questionable methods to accomplish this goal.

Seems like a reach, huh? Well, to further support this theory, eagle-eyed fans have concluded that Dameron’s placement on the latest poster sheds further light on his darkness. Dameron is featured on the right side (aka the Dark Side) alongside Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma. Considering he has been taken under the wing of General Leia Organa, Dameron would truly have to have his dedication pushed to the edge to move to the Dark Side.

Finn Will Die In This Movie

Remember when the trailers for The Force Awakens led us all to believe that Finn would be a Jedi? Oh, how we hate the misdirect.

Considering Finn’s final state in the last movie, we are left wondering what his new role will be in The Last Jedi. Sadly, some fans speculate that Finn’s time in the franchise will come to an end at the hands of Captain Phasma. As shown in the latest trailer, the two are engaged in a very heated battle

At one point during this fight, you can see Finn’s reflection in Phasma’s helmet. This moment triggers a theory tried to a tweet by Star Wars: Phasma author Delilah S. Dawson: "The thing about Captain PHASMA is that when she kills you, you have to watch yourself die." So even though Boyega is listed as returning in Star Wars: Episode IX, his role could be limited to, say, a flashback or Force vision? We hope not!

The Knights Of Ren Were The Jedi Luke Was Training

Knights of Ren in Star Wars The Force Awakens

Introduced briefly in The Force Awakens during Rey’s Force vision, Kylo Ren can be seen surrounded by six other fighters known as the Knights of Ren. The speculation is that these six soldiers, along with Ren, were responsible for the destruction of the Jedi Temples and Luke’s new Jedi Academy. Although the plan was to destroy these Jedi in training, some fans theorized that maybe these are some of the other students.

Perhaps rather than killing all of the other Jedi apprentices, Ren actually converted them to the dark side and they have joined him as his students.

Although new theories propose that the Knights of Ren are actually Tashu’s Acolytes of the Beyond, the idea of former Padawans turning on their master is undoubtedly intriguing.

Rey and Kylo Ren Will Fall in Love

Star Wars - Kylo Ren and Rey battle

We know that a romance with eventually emerge in these new films but the thought of these two characters together just doesn't quite sit right with us. However, the hints at Rey and Kylo joining forces are heavily emphasized in the latest trailer, so a partnership is probably inevitable.

In our earlier article, we concluded that “Rey and Kylo Ren are the yin and yang of the sequel trilogy, arguably its two most important characters moving forward. There’s absolutely no reason for Lucasfilm to lie about this.” However, the extent of their relationship is still unknown.

Fans have already shipped Rey with Finn or Poe but… Kylo? Considering he murdered his own father (an act that shook Rey to her core), we find it hard to believe she would be capable of forgiving him for his deeds anytime soon. However, some fans are convinced that, given the track history of unlikely romances in the Star Wars Universe, their relationship is bound to happen.

We already expressed our dislike for the idea, and we are sticking to it (for right now).

Snoke Has Been Working With Luke Skywalker

Snoke

One of the more mysterious aspects of the latest The Last Jedi trailer involve the lengthy dialogues spoken by both Luke and Snoke. While most people have speculated that they were aimed at their pupils Rey and Kylo respectively, some fans have theorized that Snoke is actually speaking to Luke. This theory would have to tie to the fact that Luke lost his way over the course of the storyline and may be more susceptible to the dark side.

Fans have drawn parallels between Snoke's speech to (possibly) Luke and Palpatine's speech to Anakin when he lured the young Jedi to the dark side. Yeah, it is a stretch, but this would tie into the theory that Luke will turn into a villain.

Rey has Familial Ties to Obi-Wan Kenobi

Rey And Obi-Wan Side By Side

One of the biggest mysteries of the new Star Wars movies is the truth of Rey’s origins. Originally, the theory was that she was the child of Han Solo and Leia Organa. However, neither one of her "parents" recognized her when they met. Kind of important considering they were her parents, right?

Given that Force-sensitivity can be passed down in families (i.e., Luke, Leia, and Kylo), it's likely at least one or both of her parents could be Force users. Although Luke’s name was batted around as well (again, he did not recognize her when they met), fans have proposed another Jedi Master: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Fan are speculating that Rey is his granddaughter.

Thinking back to his introduction into the original trilogy, not much is revealed about Ben Kenobi’s life on Tatooine. During this time, while watching over Luke, maybe he settled down with a wife and had kids. Hey, he had a lot of time on his hands!

Rey was Snoke's Apprentice When She was a Child

Star Wars Rey Snoke Theories

The joy of international trailers! Not only do they provide more content than the English versions but the subtle changes in language can lead to a plethora of new theories.

After the plural Jedi theory was disproven by director Rian Johnson earlier this year, fans have now found further evidence in the Taiwanese trailer. The latest speculation: Rey was Snoke’s apprentice as a child. As we reported earlier this month, in the new trailer Snoke's lines “When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power,” includes Taiwanese word for the feminine "you" - possibly meaning Snoke is addressing Rey.

One point to keep in mind is that Snoke did not appear to know that Rey existed until she started demonstrating her ability to use the Force. While this could be another error in translation, fans have yet to dismiss the possibility of their connection.

Kylo Actually Saves Leia

Blended image of Kylo Ren and Leia Organa from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

While it still pains us to think about the tragic death that took place in The Force Awakens, the after-effects of Han’s death may have taken an unexpected toll on Kylo Ren. He was yet to complete his training under Snoke and seems to be conflicted about his current path.

The Last Jedi trailer depicts Ren facing yet another test of morality: possibly killing his own mother, Leia, to destroy his past once and for all. Given his internal conflict over killing his father, maybe his change of heart could lead to him saving her instead. This blurring of the definitive lines between good and evil has continued throughout the franchise and appears to extend into the new movies as well.

Snoke Will Sacrifice Kylo for Rey

Since their fight in The Force Awakens, fans are well aware that Rey is far stronger than Kylo Ren. After losing his battle with her, he has been sent to “complete his training.” Snoke has fixated on Rey since sensing her powers awaken and, at the same time, becoming more aware of the flaws of his own pupil.

Although we see glimpses of Rey being tortured in the new The Last Jedi trailer, we do not believe he would destroy such a great tool. This selfish behavior is nothing new in the Star Wars Universe. In our article focusing on Snoke’s possible plans, we stated that “Palpatine was actively recruiting Anakin Skywalker while using Count Dooku as a placeholder and later asked Luke Skywalker to 'take your father’s place at my side' while Darth Vader was in the room with them. It would appear Snoke has something similar in store…”

Not only is this betrayal a strong possibility but Ren may be sacrificed to help convert Rey to the Dark Side. Snoke has no loyalties to anyone except himself and gaining the most powerful Force user would be worth the sacrifice. Sorry, Kylo.
