It looks as if Carrie Fisher's infamous dog Gary has a counterpart in a galaxy far, far away thanks to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Thanks to the tragic death of Han Solo in The Force Awakens, the first new Star Wars film in nearly a decade fittingly revolved around Harrison Ford and his character as much as its new heroes and villains. Leia had a key role in the Resistance but not much to do in the film, while Luke was nothing more than a cliffhanger at the end. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, however, will spend a great deal more time on the Skywalker twins.

Though Mark Hamill has spent the past year ceaselessly promoting Star Wars: The Last Jedi and trolling fans in equal measure, the passing of Carrie Fisher has added a bittersweet air to her return to this month's film. It's said that the movie will give the late actor her due and serve as a fitting send-off for the popular character. And to add just a little extra love for Fisher to the film, writer/director Rian Johnson included a special homage.

Twitter use irishgeekgirl noticed a familiar looking alien in a Star Wars: The Last Jedi photo set on the planet Canto Bight. Behind Finn and Rose, a patron of the casino can be seen holding an alien creature eerily reminiscent of Gary Fisher, Carrie's now-iconic French bulldog. Sure enough, when the fan reached out to Rian Johnson he confirmed the Easter egg (see the exchange below).

@rianjohnson we @FanthaTracks want to know if you can confirm this cute little creature is #spacegary in #TheLastJedi pic.twitter.com/0if7XRiqog— clair henry (@irishgeekgirl) December 6, 2017

YES! Wow, good eyes.— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) December 6, 2017

Sadly, it appears Gary himself won't be in the film. Still, the little intergalactic puppy is a fitting way to feature the fan-favotire pet in the movie and further honor Fisher's life. The actor was known for her irreverent personality and would surely love her companion having a small part in her final project.

As for Leia's actual role in the film, it's still a bit up in the air. We know she will continue leading the Resistance and will certainly have some sort of confrontation with Kylo. Their dynamic is a rather complex one, and seeing how Leia reacts to her son after he killed his father will likely be a heartbreaking moment, only accented by Fisher's passing.

There were rumors at one point that Episode IX would feature Leia using CGI, similar to how her character and Tarkin appeared in Rogue One. It now seems, however, that Leia's final bow will come in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The only question now is how exactly the character will depart in the film or if she will pass offscreen in-between movies. Either way, their will be plenty of tears of both joy and sadness when Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters.
