Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed Star Wars: The Last Jedi will show baby versions of the adorable Porgs in at least one scene. The feathered natives of the planet Ahch-To have been the breakout stars of the marketing campaign, winning many fans over with their cute appearance. There is concern in some circles that they'll end up being this generation's answer to the Ewoks, but Episode VIII writer/director Rian Johnson has promised the Porgs earn their place in the movie, providing some levity in an otherwise darker affair.
Fans have already gotten a taste of how the Porgs will be implemented, as one is seen in the latest theatrical trailer letting out a ferocious battle cry while Chewbacca evades TIE fighters in the Millennium Falcon. To date, this is the only glimpse of the animals in the final film viewers have been treated to, but Kennedy was at the liberty to reveal one more moment that will surely delight crowds come December. We will see a baby Porg onscreen.

Kennedy shared this nugget during an interview on The Star Wars Show (watch the video above) while complimenting Johnson's prowess behind the camera:
"Rian Johnson... I don't have enough accolades to say about him. He just had an amazingly good time every single day. He's such a huge fan and I think he's done an exception job of taking these new characters and some of the legacy characters and moving us to this next place. And I think there'll be some surprises that people aren't expecting. That's what I think he's brought to this. He just has such an incredibly fertile imagination. There's a brief little moment in The Last Jedi where there's a little Porg and then there's a little baby Porg next to the Porg... it doesn't get better than that."
It's safe to assume we have seen only the fully-grown Porgs so far in advertising, so one can only imagine how cute a toddler Porg would be. Comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's Baby Groot will surely be made, as the infant tree was likewise a merchandising machine that won the hearts of millions around the globe. Considering Porgs are said to be inquisitive creatures by nature, it will be interesting to see if any of the babies get into trouble through their curiosity, as they surely won't know what to make of Rey, Chewie, and R2-D2 visiting. Everything is new to a kid, and they're eager to examine what they don't know. Ahch-To is a remote planet that doesn't get many tourists, so a Wookiee, a droid, and a scavenger will pique the Porgs' interests.
Lucasfilm's licensing partners have already spun the Porgs into gold with a variety of toys that have sold like hot cakes, so once The Last Jedi comes out, it's all but a guarantee there will be some baby Porg merchandise on store shelves that'll generate massive amounts of revenue. Even if the toddler has a few seconds of screen time, people will want one of their own to bring home if the moment is as amusing as it sounds. The studio has to be counting their lucky stars they gave Johnson creative freedom on Episode VIII, as the Porgs were his brainchild and have become a bona fide phenomenon.
