Adam Driver’s career has skyrocketed in recent years. He first rose to prominence with his supporting role of Adam Sackler in HBO’s Girls. He has also appeared in many movies in a wide range of genres, making appearances in Lincoln, J. Edgar, While We’re Young, and Frances Ha. However, he acquired mainstream success when he was cast as the villain Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He will be reprising his role of Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which will open in theaters on December 15, 2017.
Screen Rant got a chance to talk with Adam Driver on press day, where we discussed how Kylo Ren views Rey going into The Last Jedi, how he would like Kylo Ren’s story to be resolved in Episode IX, and whether or not he’s read fan theories and what he thinks about the fan theories out there of Kylo Ren.
SR: At the end of The Force Awakens see that Kylo is kind of filled with rage after just killing his father but when he sees an opportunity with Rey he kind of slows down a little bit. What's his perspective on Rey going into The Last Jedi?
Adam Driver: I think it's more of a question mark. I don't think he's really landed on any kind of answer about what his opinion is of her. I think there's just, there's something that he recognizes that maybe no one else does I would say. But he hasn't, I don't think it's something that he's resolved in his mind.
SR: He definitely views Rey in a unique kind of way?
Adam Driver: Oh, for sure. I would say.
SR: Okay. Now as far as we know, Episode IX is still in the script phase. You as Adam, how would you like to see Kylo's story be resolved?
Adam Driver: I have no opinion.
SR: Really?
Adam Driver: Yeah. I've learned in doing a TV show, the best way to go into something that kind of turns and like, it's episodic, or keeps going on is to have no idea and then I'm always kind of pleasantly surprised. For me that's kind of one of the fun parts of your job is not kind of having... I have a general sense but as far as how things kind of get there, I know, I love being... and even the general sense, I'm open to being kind of. Surprised by it. It's more fun for me to not know.
SR: That's interesting because actually my next question is going into a project like this and not knowing what the fate in obviously Episode IX, is it more fun to play it that way and obviously it seems that way.
Adam Driver: Sure. I mean, there's like a bits of pieces that we started working on that kind of, I know are answered in this one that we kind of started in The Force Awakens, that I knew was operating you know when we were doing that one, that I knew as time went that they kind of reveal themselves but even if those things, there's a lot of those things that will never be revealed and there's no plans to. There are things that I think about that, for me, is what makes it kind of more fun in the playing of them, you know.
SR: Is there anything that you may have read online that may have been right about your character that you've seen?
Adam Driver: No.
SR: No?
Adam Driver: I mean, I don't know. I haven't read any that I can remember. I don't know. I'm kind of off the fan theories. What are fan theories? I mean, I know what they are, but what are what are some of the fan theories?
SR: So fan theories. Like uh, that you...
Adam Driver: Oh, well then don't tell them, because actually if you tell me then if I say yes or no than a kind of destroys it.
SR: How do we how do we see evolution...
Adam Driver: So yes. (Laughs)
SR: How do we see the relationship of Kylo's relationship with Snoke evolve?
Adam Driver: How do we see it evolve?
SR: Yeah, in this film.
Adam Driver: It evolves. Yeah, it's hard to say without giving anything away.
SR: Now you guys seem to have a lot of fun, that I've seen in the behind the scenes featurettes. Does your character have, I mean, you're pretty active in The Force Awakens right. Is there a lot more activity that you do in this film?
Adam Driver: I mean, it's hard to compare. It's just kind of a different, different mode. I don't know about activity or not activity. It all at all kind of feels like one giant marathon until it's over. Then it's up to Rian or J.J. to decide what works and what doesn't.
