More details about Disney's Star Wars theme park attractions will be revealed during next month's D23 event. The purchase of Lucasfilm by Disney for $4 billion in October of 2012 has had a major effect on the movie industry and pop culture, as a whole. A pair of new Star Wars movies have since been produced and there are several more on the way, including this December’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. On top of that, a whole new class of merchandise has arrived on the scene, featuring both new characters and more traditional ones.
There’s also the theme park aspect. Star Wars attractions and characters have begun appearing at Disney theme parks, with Lucasfilm creations almost as ubiquitous a presence at Walt Disney World these days as Mickey, Goofy and the various princesses. In 2015, Disney announced that Star Wars Land attractions would open in 2019 at both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. Fortunately, we'll know more about the attractions well-ahead of then.
Disney announced Thursday, in a blog post on the official Disney Parks Blog, that it will devote an “entire pavilion” at the upcoming D23 Expo to the “the Star Wars-themed lands coming to Disneyland park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.” The post, by Jeffrey Epstein, also uses the name “A Galaxy of Stories,” and unveils the following logo:
So what can we expect to see at D23 about Star Wars? The blog post references "the locations, starships, creatures and droids that will populate this remote village on the Outer Rim,” which tracks with the video presented by Disney at the Star Wars Celebration back in April. The goal, as stated before, is to give park-goers the impression that they’re living inside the Star Wars universe.
There’s clearly heavy demand for an expanded presence for Star Wars at the Disney parks. A whole new generation of young kids are in love with the movies, while older fans of various generations never quite fell out of love. Before low, we might not even remember a time when Star Wars wasn’t a big part of Disney, or the Disney parks.
It’s also worth noting that once again, Disney is not using the phrase “Star Wars Land” to describe the new area; it’s also unclear whether “A Galaxy of Stories” applies to the exhibit itself or to something else.
The D23 Expo is scheduled for July 14-16 at the Anaheim Convention Center, near Disneyland. The Star Wars lands are scheduled to open, in both Florida and California, in 2019.
