Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Hidden Empire #1One of the first Force abilities fans saw Kylo Ren use at the start of his Star Wars career was ‘Force Stasis’ despite the fact that this was not a usual power used by Ren’s idol, Darth Vader–and now it may have been revealed exactly how Kylo Ren learned that particular ability.

Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren made his debut in Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens when he descended upon a planet where the Resistance were plotting against the First Order. Upon arriving at this world, Kylo Ren and his forces were attacked by Resistance troops with one of their laser blasts coming dangerously close to hitting Kylo himself. However, Ren proved that he could handle a lone laser blast, though not in a way that many would expect. Anytime lasers were shot at Darth Vader, he would deflect them either with the Force (as shown in Episode V) or with his lightsaber (as shown in Rogue One). What Kylo did, however, was he stopped the laser blast in midair, and then held it in stasis until he took his leave. While subtle, this was a significant display of Kylo Ren’s power–but where did he learn it? Vader never used it, so Kylo had no reason to specifically seek out this power–so, where did it come from? Well, one Star Wars comic may have just answered those questions.

In Star Wars: Hidden Empire #1 by Charles Soule and Steven Cummings, Qi’ra, the leader of the Crimson Dawn, has been discovered by Emperor Palpatine after she and her organization have been working tirelessly to bring down the Empire once and for all. In her fight against Darth Sidious, Qi’ra has recruited a number of Dark Side users and academics–including the Knights of Ren. In this issue, Qi’ra uses the Dark Side energy within the Knights of Ren to power an ancient artifact that contains the power necessary to defeat the Emperor: the Fermata Cage–and its function is to freeze its victims in time through manipulated Dark Side energy.

Kylo Ren Learned Force Stasis From the Fermata Cage

Star Wars: Kylo Ren Force Stasis power explained.

The fact that both the Knights of Ren and Palpatine were involved in the Fermata Cage’s usage in this issue can’t be a coincidence when considering what it does and what fans saw Kylo Ren do in The Force Awakens. As fans learn in both the sequel trilogy films and in the comic series Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren, Kylo was trained by the Knights of Ren before he murdered their leader and became the leader himself. This means that the Knights of Ren could have shared with Kylo the secrets of the power that surged within the Fermata Cage–power that was derived from their connection to the Dark Side in the first place (as shown in this issue). However, there is one other person who may have taught this ‘Force Stasis’ power to Kylo Ren: the Emperor.

As revealed in The Rise of Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine was Snoke all along, and ‘Snoke’ was just a cloned vessel through which Darth Sidious could still influence the galaxy. After Kylo Ren proved himself worthy of Snoke’s teachings by learning from–and then taking control over–the Knights of Ren, Kylo continued his apprenticeship with Snoke aka the Emperor. It is entirely possible that the Emperor remembered Force Stasis from his encounter with Qi’ra in this issue and trained his new student in the ways of its power, which was then displayed perfectly in The Force Awakens. However, no matter who taught Kylo Ren Force Stasis, this comic issue seems to confirm that the power itself was learned from the Fermata Cage–a piece of information that has potentially redefined Star Wars lore forever.
