One gaming insider has seemingly given validity to the rumors that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is indeed getting a remake. These rumors have circulated around BioWare's 2003 RPG for years, since it is considered by many to be one of the best, if not the best, video game set in a galaxy far, far away.

The recent history of Star Wars video games has been rather rocky ever since Disney purchased the intellectual property back in 2012. Soon after that acquisition, Electronic Arts signed a 10-year exclusivity licensing deal which made it the only entity that could make and distribute new Star Wars content. The results have received rather mixed receptions, particularly when it comes to new titles. Meanwhile some older games under the intellectual property have been getting the remake treatment from companies outside of EA, and one company in particular may be working on bringing KOTOR to modern gaming platforms.

News site PCGamesN reported on an interview wherein gaming industry insider Jason Schreier gave further credence to the rumors surrounding the renowned Star Wars RPG. According to Schreier, Aspyr Media is in charge of bringing the remake to life, which is something he had hinted at back in February. Aspyr has worked with KOTOR before as a port house by bringing the game to both Mac and mobile platforms.

Knights of the Old Republic Star Wars

Not only does Aspyr have prior experience with KOTOR, but it has also ported other classic Star Wars titles to modern consoles, including the recent Republic Commando port to the Nintendo Switch. That said, it seems the studio's plans for KOTOR are different, especially with the way Schreier talks about it. The way the project is discussed seems to make it feel more akin to the Demon's Souls remaster or the Final Fantasy VII remake.

In the minds of many Star Wars fans, it is about time that KOTOR got a remaster. Players love this title so much that there have even been fan attempts to remaster the game. It seems like this should have happened much sooner given KOTOR's popularity with not just Star Wars fans, but a large portion of the entire gaming community. If Aspyr is indeed working on a legitimate remake and not just a port, then there is an opportunity to really turn Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic into something special with the aid of modern technology. Only time will tell if these rumors will prove true.
