A remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is not only in existence, but being developed by Aspyr as recently rumored, multiple sources indicate. Aspyr is perhaps best known for developing ports, including earlier Mac, iOS, and Android versions of KOTOR, and recent PlayStation and Switch versions of Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, and Star Wars Racer. Typically, the company hasn't been involved in the work demanded by a remake, but it appears an exception has been made for the classic RPG.

The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was developed by BioWare, and was novel among Star Wars games at the time for being a full-fledged RPG with branching dialogue and round-based combat. It was also different in being set nearly 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire, and hinging a player's turn to the Light or Dark Side of the Force based on plot decisions. The title helped to cement BioWare's reputation, and laid the design groundwork for Mass Effect. It makes sense, then, that fans of the series have been clamoring for a modern return.

Aspyr's involvement in the Star Wars: KOTOR remake's development has been further asserted on an episode of The MinnMax Show by Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, and the claim was later corroborated by Eurogamer. The latter adds that effort is being made to produce a true remake and not just another port, though what that might involve isn't known. The game will presumably get a 4K upgrade and updated models and textures, but bringing it up to modern standards could also mean gameplay and interface changes since Knights of the Old Republic first shipped in 2003. It could also fall under new content control by Disney, which didn't buy LucasFilm (and by extension Star Wars) until 2012.

As far back as January 2020, rumors hinted that a Knights of the Old Republic reboot or sequel was underway, possibly even merging aspects of the original two Knights of the Old Republic games. The second of those, Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords, is a direct story continuation, so it's hypothetically possible that Aspyr could abridge the series. That would demand substantial rewrites and redesigns, however, so it's more probable Aspyr would merge gameplay refinements if anything.

Schreier recently hinted at the Aspyr project but appears to have come out more confidently on the matter. The studio has recntly been developing its remake chops, as it announced Total War: Rome Remastered in March, which will be a graphical and mechanical revamp of Creative Assembly's 2004 strategy game. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic may prove to be Aspyr's most ambitious project yet, as it's reportedly tackling one of the most famous properties in both the BioWare and Star Wars fandoms.
