An insider report claims that a new Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic sequel is being developed by a studio other than original developer BioWare. Before the Mass Effect series, BioWare created a beloved sci-fi RPG in 2003’s Knights Of The Old Republic, which took players to a new era of the Star Wars universe set roughly a thousand years before the events of the movies. It also introduced fans to now-beloved KOTOR characters like Bastila Shan and Darth Revan, some of which are slowly being introduced into Disney's ongoing Star Wars canon in the form of Easter Egg references over the past few years. A sequel titled Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II - The Sith Lords was developed by Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment in 2004, and BioWare’s MMO spin-off Star Wars: The Old Republic continues to this day.

Gamers will be returning to the story that started it all soon, as a current-gen remake of the original Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic was announced during September’s PlayStation Showcase livestream. Longtime Star Wars PC port developed Aspyr Media will be developing Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake instead of BioWare, and Sony has confirmed that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 at launch – though this doesn’t rule out the game being made available on platforms like Xbox Series X and PC later on. Story and gameplay details about Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake have been largely kept under wraps since its initial announcement, but some fans are speculating that the remake could lead to another full-fledged KOTOR title down the road.

There might be some truth to these speculations, as the reputable insider Bespin Bulletin claims that there is another Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic game being developed by a studio other than BioWare. This claim was made during the latest episode of BOB the Podcast (via CBR), where Bespin Bulletin states that they heard from noted gaming journalist Jason Schreier that this new KOTOR game isn’t being published by EA and that players will “never guess” the developer that is actually working on it. None of this has been officially confirmed, but it is worth noting that Bespin Bulletin has been a reliable source of Star Wars news and insider tidbits as far back as the days of Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker.

While EA is supposedly not the company publishing this new Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic game, this rumor comes right on the heels of a blockbuster announcement of three new Star Wars titles being developed by EA’s in-house studio Respawn Entertainment - including the long-awaited sequel to 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Other Star Wars titles in the works include Quantic Dreams’ High Republic-era Star Wars: Eclipse and an untitled open-world game by Ubisoft. In the meantime, Aspyr Media recently ported the original Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic to the Nintendo Switch ahead of the release of KOTOR Remake.

There seems to be no shortage of exciting Star Wars games on the horizon, and it looks like a brand-new Knights Of The Old Republic sequel could be one of them. Bespin Bulletin’s claims are still just a rumor at this point, but it will be interesting to see just where the ever-expanding story of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic will go in this supposed sequel, and if it will tie into more recent Star Wars media like The High Republic.
