As powerful as Revan is, the crew of the Ebon Hawk in 2003's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic play a vital role, and some are smarter than the game suggests. The rag-tag group Revan recruits while on a mission to stop the Sith from reinitializing an ancient weapon assist him in encounters with enemy forces utilizing unique abilities and weaponry.

Following BioWare's signature companion system for gameplay, each teammate functions differently and it is incumbent upon the player to insert them in the right situations to make combat less stressful. Some are power-oriented while others prefer the Han Solo "shoot first" method. Afterward, these same characters might have wisdom to pass along if they are engaged in private.

T3-M4

The droid T3-M4 in Star Wars KOTOR.

The custom-made precursor to R2-D2 is a unique member of Revan's crew and functions primarily as a security specialist making areas of the game map and supply caches accessible. T3-M4 is also capable of defending itself and other companions he accompanies with various weapons such as flame throwers and stun rays.

T3-M4's intelligence can only be judged by its design and the credit for that goes to Janice Null, the droid shop owner who built T3-M4 for Taris' most powerful crime lord, Davik Kang. Her prowess with circuitry and linguistics left a module that proved invaluable in Revan's quest to find the Star Forge.

Trask

Trask Ulgo greets the player in the prologue of Star Wars KOTOR.

Trask is the Richard Jenkins from Mass Effect of Knights of the Old Republic. Jenkins was overzealous and reckless while Trask was brave and determined to escort his roommate, whom he believed was a grunt like himself to the Endar Spire's escape pods in the game's prologue.

Players only encounter Trask in the first 10 minutes of gameplay so they have little time to evaluate his usefulness let alone intelligence. However, it becomes clear that Trask is a loyal soldier willing to sacrifice his life for the Republic. His suggestion to engage the boarding party is a questionable one and eventually, he finds himself facing a Dark Jedi, making his biggest decision in the game foolhardy.

Juhani

Juhani speaks to the player at the Jedi Academy on Dantooine in Star Wars KOTOR.

When you first meet Juhani, she is a talented padawan at the Jedi Academy on Dantooine in the game's first act. However, she has allowed her abilities to become corrupted by the dark side and is powerful enough to influence local wildlife. Revan encounters her after searching through an ancient grove and is baited into a lightsaber match.

The battle can either result in Juhani's surrender or death giving her intelligence rating wide-ranging parameters. If she refuses to capitulate, her untimely and senseless death becomes a waste of raw potential that the Jedi Order desperately needs in their war against the Sith. However, if she agrees to return to the Academy, she is given a second chance to aid Revan's operation off-world but continues to struggle with her darker tendencies.

HK-47

The assassin droid HK-47 from Star Wars KOTOR

The assassin protocol droid HK-47 is probably the most efficient killing machine in the old republic era of the Star Wars universe. Sporting his signature Blaster Rifle, he loyally obeys his master whomever that might be but is especially partial to Revan upon his reprogramming in the game's third act should the player choose to complete his quest.

HK-47's quirky sense of humor suggests that he is sentient and possesses free will. His uncompromising belief in serving a superior being, however, compromises his ability to evaluate his safety and he allowed his memory core to be wiped by Darth Malak and be exiled to the Anchorhead settlement on Tatooine.

Canderous Ordo

Canderous Ordo from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic talking to the player.

Davik's top lieutenant and the only Mandalorian on Revan's team is among the strongest of his companions. Whenever a player is caught in a tough battle with formable enemies, including fellow Mandalorians, Canderous gives the player a fighting chance every time. He, like HK-47, always has a blaster of some kind ready to go and is deadly accurate.

Canderous is a mercenary by trade who possesses quite a few skills that have helped him achieve great success and respect. His tales about his exploits in the Mandalorian-Republic war are the stuff nightmares are made of and he bears the scars. He primarily relies on his trigger finger and poker face to achieve his goals.

Carth Onasi

The player meets Carth Onasi aboard the Endar Spire in Knights of the Old Republic

Carth Onasi is a battle-tested pilot and well-rounded Republic loyalist. Having assisted Revan and Bastila to formulate a strategy to escape the doomed Taris planet, he is invited to join the pursuit of uncovering the location of the Star Forge.

Carth spends a lot of time throughout the game recounting his past experiences, some of which are tragic, and speculating about the future, most notably his desire to exert revenge on his former commanding officer Saul Karath. His inability to curtail his stronger emotions and embrace paranoia are only dismissed when some of his premonitions come true depending on the player's choices as Revan.

Zaalbar

Zaalbar fights Tusken Raiders in Knights Of The Old Republic

Zaalbar is a Wookiee living on Taris in the Undercity with Mission Vao. Every day is a fight for survival in the decaying sector of a planet where the rich live above the surface and the poorest roam the underground tunnels in search of work whist avoiding swoop gangs and elements of Davik Kang's Exchange syndicate.

In order to gain access to vital technology to aid his escape, Revan had to rescue Zaalbar from Gamorrean raiders intending to sell him into slavery. Sensing an opportunity, Zaalbar struck an alliance with Revan swearing a "life debt" to him. Being a gentle giant until provoked, Zaalbar is strong enough to defend himself and Mission but is well justified in befriending a Force sensitive friend and using them for personal security and refuge.

Jolee Bindo

Jolee Bindo fights off Katarns on Kashyyyk in Knights of the Old Republic

Jolee Bindo exiled himself from the Jedi Order years before he encountered Revan and his companions on the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk. Revan reaffirmed his belief the Jedi had failed to learn a principal lesson that the nature of The Force required a pupil of it to strike balance between light and dark traits.

Jolee is a wise old warrior from a different age of Jedi Knights who lived by his principles and compromised them for no one. His command of The Force is exceptional and amplified when part of a three-person Force sensitive party. One-on-one conversations with him reveal a great deal of wisdom which might influence the player's decision to turn toward the light or embrace the dark side by game's end.

Bastila Shan

Bastila Shan from Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.

Bastila Shan is well known in the Jedi inner circle for her rare ability of battle meditation, which she used to capture the once Darth Revan and turn him into an ally for the game's main story missions. Her discipline of The Force and mastery of the lightsaber make her a premier sentinel and ideal mentor for Revan reborn.

Bastila takes her oath to the Order very seriously and dedicates her life to the pursuit of advancing Jedi ideals but suffers from the arrogance of her own skills and emotional attachments. She knows better than to accompany Revan on his quest into the Sith Academy knowing their teachings could easily corrupt her. Only Revan's resilience and non-lethal words can rescue her from Malak's force persuasion to help him harness the full power of the Star Forge.

Mission Vao

Kotor companion Mission Vao on Taris.

The toughest kid to frequent Javyar's Cantina and the Hidden Bek base represents the smartest companion of Revan's entourage in Knights of the Old Republic. Her friendship with Zaalbar kept her safe when her brother abandoned her at a young age until Revan presented her with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make her infiltration and geography skills useful.

Wherever Mission goes, she is never alone and always contributing her fair share to the quest at hand. While not Force-sensitive, she wields dual blasters as well as Carth and Canderous. Hers and Revan's enemies don't give her a second thought and she takes advantage of their underestimation. Despite her size and lack of experience, Mission handles herself well and uses her wits to her advantage.
