Star Wars sequel trilogy star John Boyega says that he’s open to a return to the franchise if J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy are involved. The final outing for Boyega in the trilogy came two years ago when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker marked an official end to the Skywalker era. Overall the sequel trilogy earned mixed responses from Star Wars fans, and Boyega’s Finn was one newly introduced character that many fans wanted to see more of – an issue that Boyega has also previously noted.

Though being in a Star Wars film is a dream come true for many actors, the reality isn’t always what some hope it to be. Boyega certainly showcased a significant amount of excitement over his casting as a Stormtrooper turned resistance fighter, but as the world quickly discovered, the iconic sci-fi franchise comes with its own degree of challenges. Almost immediately after he was cast, racist trolls used online forums and social media to spew their hatred of a Black Stormtrooper in the Star Wars universe. Real Star Wars fans quickly overwhelmed this absurd stance, and Boyega went on to help deliver a strong performance as one of the franchise’s most underrated characters. However, by the time the sequel trilogy culminated, Boyega was confident that his Star Wars days were over.

Fast forward two years, and it seems that Boyega has reconsidered his previous stance. As EW reports, Boyega recently revealed that his time within the Star Wars franchise might not yet be over. The 29-year-old said that he is “open to the conversation” of taking part in more Star Wars films, as long as Abrams, Kennedy, and “maybe someone else from the team” are involved. Whether or not there’s room for more Finn in whatever direction future Star Wars films take, fans will be happy to know that Boyega is potentially ready for more:

"Whichever way, I am open to the conversation as long as it is Kathleen, J.J., and maybe someone else and the team, it's a no-brainer."

John Boyega in Star Wars

While there are currently big plans for the Star Wars universe in the years to come, exactly what those plans are remain unknown to the public. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Rian Johnson, who was responsible for the divisive Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is currently at work on a new trilogy, separate from the Skywalker saga. Marvel's Kevin Feige and Taika Waititi are also working on Star Wars movies, but little is known about their projects. With several new films on the immediate Star Wars agenda, it doesn’t take much imagination to consider that Finn could play some part in whatever comes next. It certainly would give Disney the chance to better flesh out the character, as this was a major complaint of Boyega’s and fans alike.

However, Abrams has previously stated that he’s not interested in large-scale franchise films for the time being and that he would instead like to focus on his own original work. What’s more, Boyega’s sudden rejuvenated interest in being part of future Star Wars endeavors comes in light of the fact that his post-Star Wars work hasn’t exactly elevated his profile to any significant degree. Finn is a character who still has plenty of potential but Boyega’s previous disinterest in the franchise could hurt his chances of returning.
