Star Wars Jedi: Survivor teases at a new villain in its latest trailer, and it isn't who players may have thought it would be. While the assumption has been that the main villain of the sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order would be The Grand Inquisitor, the trailer reveals the true antagonist to be a yet-unnamed Imperial Senator, though how he will oppose Cal and his crew remains unknown.

Jedi: Survivor is the hotly anticipated sequel to Respawn's acclaimed Jedi: Fallen Order, which introduced Cal Kestis, a Jedi forced out of hiding by the Imperial Inquisitors. The main villain of the first game was Trilla, a fallen Jedi turned Second Sister of the Inquisition. With Trilla dead at the end of Fallen Order, however, Jedi: Survivor must provide Cal's next challenge.

Seeing as how the main antagonist of the first game was the Second Sister of the Inquisitors, it makes sense to have the main villain of the follow-up be the Grand Inquisitor, going up a step in the totem pole. However, that is not the direction that Respawn seems to be going. Instead, the main villain of Jedi: Survivor will be someone else entirely.

The Main Villain Of Jedi: Survivor Will Be An Imperial Senator

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Darker Than Fallen Order

While it goes without saying that the Inquisitors will undoubtedly show up in Jedi: Survivor eventually, when it comes to the overall villain of the narrative, that honor belongs to the yet-unnamed alien seen in the trailer. Respawn's Stig Asmussen, in an interview on the official Star Wars website, describes him as being an Imperial Senator who "makes a dangerous deal on Coruscant." The trailer shows this mysterious Senator buying Cal's reforged lightsaber.

The Imperial Senate and its members have been mostly a non-entity in the Star Wars canon, not even appearing onscreen in A New Hope, the only film where they are mentioned. Emperor Palpatine dissolved the Senate off-camera to finally do away with the last remnant of the Republic. Having an Imperial Senator in the years before A New Hope as the main antagonist is an interesting and welcome twist to the usual Star Wars EU formula, which is fitting since Fallen Order's exploration of Nightsister Magic proves that Respawn are more than willing to take what fans know about Star Wars and play around with it.

A lot is still unknown about the villain of Jedi: Survivor. His name, for example, has yet to have been given. But what little that was shown of him, staring down at Cal's lightsaber, his office shrouded in darkness save for the window behind him, suggests quite the intimidating presence, one likely to stick with fans until Star Wars Jedi: Survivor eventually releases in 2023.
