The final line in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is the biggest indicator of what direction its sequel could take. Jedi: Survivor follows Cal's journey in 9 BBY, five years after the events of Fallen Order, and this time jump reintroduces players to an older, experienced, and more powerful Jedi than before. Jedi: Survivor also introduces players to characters Cal has become allied with over the five years fighting the growing Empire, with one character in particular having the potential to be a major focus for a sequel's narrative.

One of the more emotional plot twists that could have lasting consequences is tied into one of Jedi: Survivor's new characters: Bode Akuna. Bode Akuna was introduced as yet another roguish rebel fighter who had a close bond with Cal. Over time, players learned that there was more to Bode's character, as he was a former Jedi Knight and had a daughter, Kata, who he was trying to keep safe from the Imperial Inquisitors after losing his wife, Tayala. Bode made a deal with the Imperial Security Bureau where he would infiltrate the Stinger Mantis crew as a spy in exchange for his and Kata's safety, and his betrayal ultimately led to a showdown against Cal and Merrin in the Jedi Temple on Tanalorr.

Jedi Survivor's Major Character Deaths Set Up A Potential Sequel Premise

Cal and Merrin stand at a funeral pyre for Bode, Cere and Edo at the end of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Several major deaths happen throughout Jedi: Survivor's story that will have lasting consequences for Cal and the Stinger Mantis crew. Bode killed Edo Cordova, a Jedi scholar, archaeologist, and former mentor to Stinger Mantis crew member Cere Junda, and launched a massive Imperial attack on the Jedha base. During this assault, Cere fought Darth Vader, who personally led the attack, and was killed by the Sith Lord.

Cal was distraught at these losses, and he and Merrin track Bode down to Tanalorr. Despite this, Cal still attempts to get Bode to surrender throughout the fight and offered him and Kata safety with the Stinger Mantis crew instead, but upon seeing Bode hurt Kata, Cal realized Bode was too consumed by hate and desperation and was forced to kill his friend. Cal appeared to keep true to his word of keeping Kata safe, though, as she appeared to join the Stinger Mantis crew by the end of Jedi: Survivor, and can be seen hanging out in Pyloon’s Saloon’s roof garden with Pili after the end of the game.

Jedi: Survivor ends with a mass funeral for Edo, Cere, and Bode. During this, Cere speaks to Cal through the Force, and the game ends with her telling Cal to “guide her through the darkness.” This is clearly in reference to Kata, who has now lost both of her parents, with one of them being at the hands of the crew now tasked with protecting her. If Kata is Force-sensitive like her father, a sequel could see the consequences of Bode's death, and Kata potentially being tempted by the dark side of the Force.

Cal Could Be A Mentor To Kata In A Jedi: Survivor Sequel

Cal, Merrin, BD-1 and Greez welcome Kata onto the Stinger Mantis crew at the end of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Players have experienced Cal as a Jedi Padawan in Jedi: Fallen Order, and now as a Jedi Knight in Jedi: Survivor, so in terms of his character progression, it would make sense to see him in a mentor-type role in a future game. Looking after Kata, who now shares a similar childhood trauma to Cal and Merrin, would be a good way to handle this transition to an even wiser version of Cal, and would serve as a payoff to the times he struggled with the allure of the dark side, and even occasionally gave into it in moments of desperation - like when he killed Bode - throughout Jedi: Survivor.

Although Cal will be struggling with feelings of guilt when trying to mentor the daughter of his former friend and the man he killed, the relationship could harken back to another from the Star Wars Jedi series. It's fitting given Cere Junda's history that she was the one to tell Cal to guide Kata through the darkness, particularly when looking at her relationship with her former Padawan, Trilla. Although she lasted longer than most, Cere broke under torture by Darth Vader and the Empire and gave up Trilla, who fell to the dark side and ultimately became the Inquisitor known as the Second Sister.

Cal saw the impact of Trilla's transformation on Cere, who suppressed her connection to the Force after feeling the power of the dark side when overwhelmed by her anger and regret. Therefore, it would be understandable that Cal would fear letting Kata succumb to a similar fate to Trilla over actions he also felt responsible for if she did turn out to be Force-sensitive like her father. The relationship would be taxing on Cal - who has already experienced the power of the dark side much as Cere did - and would have to resist letting his guilt overwhelm him in a similar way.

It also seems possible that Kata could grow and learn not to resent Cal and Merrin for killing her father in a Jedi: Survivor sequel, having seen firsthand how consumed her father had become, particularly when he hurt her in his final duel against Cal and Merrin. This could put a spin on the mentor/mentee relationship with Cal and Kata where the relationship is more one-sided, with Cal being a more emotionally closed off, reluctant mentor to his potential Padawan.

With Cal's relationship with Merrin growing at the end of Jedi: Survivor, as the two confront their feelings toward each other, it would be interesting to see how she reacts to his dynamic with Kata, with her also being involved in defeating Bode and having her own views on the situation. Merrin understands the trauma that Kata is experiencing firsthand and already discussed this with Kata in Jedi: Survivor's ending, advising her not to let it consume her. It's clear that Cal was closer to Bode than the other Stinger Mantis crew members, so Merrin could act as an anchor for Cal when these feelings of remorse take hold and could serve as an additional mentor to Kata.

However Cal's journey continues in the next Star Wars Jedi title, it's clear that his relationship with Kata will play a major part. Whether this dynamic sees him gaining another ally or a future foe is yet to be seen, but with Cal's growth and experience learned both firsthand and by the past mistakes of his comrades over Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, he has more than enough knowledge to take on the task of following Cere's instructions and guiding Kata though the darkness, should he not eventually succumb to it himself.
