The Jedi Council is a crucial part of the Star Wars timeline, with a total of 46 members having appeared in canon so far. Each Star Wars era features a different kind of Jedi Council, with many members playing a pivotal role in shaping those eras. Some members even lived long enough to serve on the council across multiple generations, from the time of the High Republic to the fall of the Jedi Order. The overarching story of the Jedi High Council is one of the most fascinating aspects of Star Wars canon, as is keeping track of every member who helped lead the Jedi Order through its long history.

Since the debut of the Jedi Council in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, only a handful of members have received significant attention in the movies. However, the prequel trilogy hinted that there were big stories to be told for certain members, with TV shows such as Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi delivering on that promise. The canon books and comics expanded on the Jedi Council even more, with The High Republic adding more members than ever. Here are all 46 members of the Jedi Council that have appeared in Star Wars canon so far, as well as what happened to them.

3 The High Republic

The High Republic era saw the Galactic Republic at its absolute best, with hope and prosperity shining across the galaxy. This was the height of the Jedi Order as well, before both the Republic and the Jedi became stagnant by the time of the prequel trilogy. Thanks to The High Republic books and comics, several new Jedi have been added to the roster of the Jedi High Council in canon. A few familiar faces have appeared in The High Republic as well, serving on the Jedi Council across different eras and expanding the stories for Jedi masters in the Star Wars franchise.

The earliest confirmed member is Yoda, who was on the Jedi Council 350 years before The Phantom Menace, and one of three Jedi Grand Masters 150 years after that. Given Yoda's 900 years of life, he could have been one or both several centuries earlier. Yoda remained a member of the Jedi Council until the Jedi Order fell during Order 66, training many Jedi who later served on the council themselves. After the Jedi Purge, Yoda spent the rest of his days in exile on Dagobah, dying peacefully and becoming one with the Force in Return of the Jedi.

Here are the other prominent Jedi Council members of the High Republic era:

  • Grand Master Lahru
  • Grand Master Pra-Tre Veter
  • Grand Master Ry Ki-Sakka
  • Ada-Li Carro
  • Adampo
  • Char-Ryl-Roy
  • Dijuka
  • Ela Sutan
  • Ephru Shinn
  • Jora Malli - Killed in the Battle of Kur.
  • Keaton Murag
  • Oppo Rancisis - Replaced by Anakin Skywalker; survived the Great Jedi Purge.
  • Rana Kant - Died between 232 and 231 BBY.
  • Soleil Agra
  • Stellan Gios - Killed on Eiram.
  • Teri Rosason
  • Xinith Tarl
  • Yaddle - Left the council shortly before Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; killed by Count Dooku.
  • Yarael Poof - Killed during a mission just before the Clone Wars.

2 Before The Phantom Menace

After the end of the High Republic era around 82 BBY, other prominent masters joined the Jedi Council in the years before The Phantom Menace. This era was less prosperous than the time of the High Republic, seeing the gradual decline of the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic, which left many citizens disillusioned by the time of the prequel trilogy. Even so, many of Star Wars' most famous masters became Jedi Council members during this time, with some remaining on the council until the fall of the Order in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

One of these Jedi was Master Dooku, who at one point served on the Jedi Council for an unknown period of time. After leaving the council, Dooku became increasingly frustrated with their decisions and failure to take action, leading him to leave the Jedi Order entirely. Although Dooku still met with the Jedi Council on occasion, by that time he had secretly joined forces with Darth Sidious, eventually creating the Separatist movement and orchestrating the Clone Wars. Dooku eventually met his end at the hands of Anakin Skywalker, and his treachery helped create a galaxy even worse than the one he had once wanted to save.

Another prominent council member was Jedi Master Jocasta Nu, who stepped down sometime prior to The Phantom Menace. She became the Chief Librarian of the Jedi Archives, and while this was a very prominent position, she now had less access to certain knowledge. During the Clone Wars, Jocasta told Ahsoka Tano that only Jedi Council members could enter the Holocron Vault and that she herself hadn't been inside for years. Despite surviving Order 66, she was captured and executed shortly after while attempting to save the archives from Darth Vader and the Inquisitorius.

Perhaps the most important Jedi Council member of this era was Sifo-Dyas, the Jedi responsible for creating the clone army. Sifo-Dyas foresaw a great conflict and told the council that the Republic needed an army, but they judged these ideas to be too extreme and removed him from the council. Instead of giving up, Sifo-Dyas worked with Dooku in secret, with one placing the order and the other finding a donor, respectively. However, Sifo-Dyas was betrayed by his old friend, with Dooku paying the Pyke Syndicate to shoot down Sifo-Dyas' ship to keep the clone army's existence a secret.

The other Jedi Council members of this era are listed as follows:

  • Alxa Kress
  • Gretz Droom
  • Jor Aerith - Killed during Order 66.
  • Katri - Killed on Raxus Secundus.
  • Poli Dapatian - Retired from the Jedi Council in 40 BBY.
  • Tera Sinube - Stepped down from the Jedi Council; killed by 9 BBY and entombed at Fortress Inquisitorius.
  • Yula Braylon - Removed from the Jedi Council for abusing her position.

1 The Prequel Trilogy

Anakin Skywalker stands before the Jedi Council in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

The Star Wars prequels and the Clone Wars marked the beginning of the end for the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Council. The Jedi of this era had become disconnected from the galaxy at large, with many seeing the Jedi as nothing but servants of a corrupt senate who only protected those in power. Things became worse with the outbreak of the Clone Wars, where the Jedi agreed to lead the Grand Army of the Republic, which turned even more people against the Order. The Jedi were finally wiped out during Order 66, with only a few key members of the Jedi Council surviving in exile.

Mace Windu joined the Jedi Council after the death of Master Katri, and later became the council's elected leader, the "Master of the Order." Mace Windu failed to prevent the Clone Wars, and he and the other Jedi couldn't see Palpatine working right in their midst. Their decision to fight as generals sent the Jedi Order down a dark path from which there was no return. Despite his mistakes, Mace was still a great Jedi and a strong leader, taking charge of the council during the Jedi's most trying times. However, he still failed to stop Darth Sidious' plans, meeting his end at the Sith Lord's hands after Anakin Skywalker's betrayal.

Obi-Wan Kenobi also became a member of the Jedi Council in this era, becoming a Jedi Master shortly after Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones when Anakin Skywalker was knighted. Obi-Wan and Anakin both served as generals in the Clone Wars, with Anakin becoming more frustrated with the council as the war progressed. Despite this, Anakin became the last Jedi appointed to the council, though only as Palpatine's representative, and he was not granted the rank of master. Palpatine manipulated Anakin into joining the dark side soon after, proclaiming him Darth Vader as they wiped out the Jedi Order.

These are the remaining members from the final years of Star Wars' Jedi Council:

  • Adi Gallia - Killed by Savage Opress.
  • Agen Kolar - Killed by Darth Sidious.
  • Coleman Kcaj - Killed by 9 BBY and entombed at Fortress Inquisitorius.
  • Coleman Trebor - Killed by Jango Fett.
  • Depa Billaba - Killed on Kaller during Order 66.
  • Eeth Koth - Killed by Darth Vader after Order 66.
  • Even Piell - Killed on Lola Sayu.
  • Ki-Adi-Mundi - Killed on Mygeeto during Order 66.
  • Kit Fisto - Killed by Darth Sidious.
  • Plo Koon - Killed on Cato Neimoidia during Order 66.
  • Saesee Tiin - Killed by Darth Sidious.
  • Shaak Ti - Killed by Anakin Skywalker during Order 66.
  • Stass Allie - Killed on Saleucami during Order 66.
