We’ve imagined what Jar Jar Binks could look like with a beard in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+. Reports have been floating around that suggest Jar Jar Binks might be appearing in the aforementioned show and that he will do so with a beard. The Star Wars character first appeared in George Lucas’ prequel trilogy and is often remembered as one of the most disliked things about it.

When we first meet Jar Jar Binks in the prequels, he is very much fresh-faced; a clumsy Gungan who has been banished from his underwater home on Naboo. After teaming up with Obi-Wan and his master Qui-Gon in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Jar Jar Binks redeems himself (or is meant to) as a Gungan general in that film’s climactic battle (even putting his clumsiness to good use). The character was meant to be a source of humor and appeal to children in that film, however, Star Wars fans reacted to him mostly with contempt. He would eventually become a delegate to the Galactic Senate in the films that followed, unwittingly aiding Emperor Palpatine in his rise to power.

The upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series will be set after the rise of Emperor Palpatine and the Empire—between Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: A New Hope. If Jar Jar Binks were to appear in that show, it would make sense for him to look somewhat disheveled; a beard would not only indicate a passage of time but a more seasoned Gungan—it would show where he's been and what he has gone through. Making certain assumptions about the color of his hair follicles, the following picture is our attempt at what Jar Jar Binks could look like when we see him next.

Presumably, Jar Jar Binks would be in a similar state to that of the gloriously-bearded Obi-Wan Kenobi after Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith; both characters intimately knew the boy who would become Darth Vader and probably feel vaguely responsible for the fall of the Republic. Story justifications aside, the inclusion of Jar Jar Binks in the Disney+ series would be a daring decision given the controversy surrounding him. Jar Jar Binks's return to Star Wars would draw attention back to the character and the actor who portrayed him, Ahmed Best (if he were to reprise the role). Best found himself at the unwarranted end of the cruel criticism from disgruntled viewers following the release of the Star Wars prequels and it greatly affected his mental health, with Best even going so far as to contemplate suicide.

Jar Jar Binks' return in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show could be great. Ahmed Best and Jar Jar Binks have not been treated fairly over the years; the Star Wars fandom is notoriously critical of the beloved franchise and creative decisions are always heavily debated. However, it’s been over twenty years since the release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and almost fifteen since the release of Star Wars: The Revenge of the Sith—things have cooled down. A well-written, mature, and, of course, bearded Jar Jar Binks could result in the redemptive arc that would give everyone some well-deserved closure.
