Warning: contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #6

The Jedi and the Hutts almost reach peace during Star Wars' High Republic when they fight alongside each other against the Drengir, but Jabba the Hutt seems to have sabotaged all attempts to broker an official, stable treaty later on.

In Marvel's High Republic series, the Jedi engage in an investigation involving the remains of a derelict Hutt ship, which points them in the direction of the planet Sedri Minor. There, the Jedi face off against sentient, amorphous carnivores known as the Drengir that threaten to consume and take over the minds of lifeforms across the galaxy. The Hutts soon arrive on Sedri Minor to protect their holdings from these plant-like monsters and are forced to form an unsteady alliance with the Jedi to eliminate the threat.

After the battle is won, the two sides attempt to negotiate an actual treaty and agree to meet on Nal Hutta in IDW Publishing's Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures #6 by writer Daniel Jose Older and Harvey Tolibao. The Hutts appear to be taking the proceedings seriously because the site is set to take place in the palace of Skarabda the Hutt. But right when the talks begin, the ship that the Jedi arrived on suddenly starts firing down on the palace and everyone gathered there. This complicates things a bit, especially as it looks as though the Jedi crafted this elaborate ruse to kill Skarabda. Although the Jedi survive the assault on the surface, they are later arrested despite denying they have anything to do with the attack. Onboard the attacking vessel, it's discovered that a group of bounty hunters somehow successfully boarded and pirated the ship before proceeding to fire down on the peace proceedings. At first, their affiliation is unknown until the topic of the vessel's missing crew comes up in conversation: "Jabba said no one gets out alive, so we're gonna tear this ship apart until we find them."

It's clear that Jabba the Hutt is either acting alone or failed to tell Skarabda and his subjects about his plan to jeopardize all future relations with the Jedi. Had Skarabda known, he would have obviously not put his life at risk for such a scheme even if Jabba had ordered his bounty hunters to not shoot Skarabda. Instead, the Hutt would have come up with an excuse not to attend the negotiations and chosen a high-ranking official to lead the proceedings in his stead. Additionally, creating a scenario where Skarabda actually believed the Jedi wanted to kill him would give the Hutt all the more reason to fervently reject future attempts at peace. Supporting this theory is that the anger and surprise exhibited by Skarabda and his subjects seem to be quite sincere unless they are good actors. The only hole in this premise is that the palace seemed to be less crowded than usual.

Regardless, it's clear that, at the very least, Jabba the Hutt wanted to sabotage the peace proceedings with the Jedi. As of now, his motivations are unknown, but it's likely that money is somehow involved and jeopardizing the likelihood of a treaty ensured he would get more of it. This predicament is nonetheless a blow to the Jedi during a time that is considered to be their golden age. Could this be one of the factors that led to the end of the High Republic's prosperity?
