Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Adventures Annual 2020

In the latest annual issue of Star Wars: Adventures from IDW Publishing, the classic bounty hunter IG-88 of Empire Strikes Back fame is featured in a short story detailing a target he once dealt with that he completely underestimated. The bounty hunting droid was tasked to find a member of an extremely rare and powerful race for Jabba the Hutt, but he had no idea how powerful his mark actually was. This target belonged to a species known as the Grand-Engineers, who apparently wield an incredible power over technology in the Star Wars universe.

IG-88 was first introduced in Episode V of the Skywalker Saga, featured in the line-up of bounty hunters hired by Darth Vader to find Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon, though Boba Fett would ultimately be the one to find Solo and claim the prize. However, it would later be revealed that IG-88 tracked Boba Fett to Bespin, though the legendary hunter almost destroyed IG-88 in the process. IG-88 was built and created in droid foundry known as Holowan Laboratories, where he killed his creators almost immediately upon activation. As such, IG-88 is formidable foe and hunter, carrying an intimidating and deadly reputation across the galaxy.

Despite his reputation and prowess, the short story Rebel Bounty from Nick Brokenshire indicates that even IG-88 can get too overconfident. Receiving a new bounty listing from Jabba the Hutt for a large sum of credits, IG-88 goes in search of a Grand-Engineer, a people with a special connection to technology who haven't been seen in decades. The most recently spotted Engineer goes by the name Lony Coleema, and has been assisting the Rebel Alliance by providing new insights into the Empire's technology and designs, ignoring her people's mandate of non-interference in the galaxy. Upon finding Coleema, IG-88 initially stuns her, taking her to his base of operations at Holowan Labs.

However, Coleema wakes up while 88 is elsewhere, giving her plenty of time to find other IG units in the abandoned lab, rapidly reprogramming them with her powers in order to fight for and protect her. While IG-88 handles them with ease, he also reveals his plans to strip mine the contents of her mind so that he might learn her secrets, rather than deliver her to Jabba. Even so, IG-88's plan to hack into her mind completely backfires. As soon as he tries, Coleema transforms herself, unleashing a massive burst of technological power that overwhelms IG-88's systems.

Apparently, one of the droids that Coleema had reprogrammed was able to get her to the Rebels in the aftermath, and Lony decided that it was time for her to return home to her people, seemingly having had enough adventures in the Star Wars galaxy. For IG-88, he was left standing in the wreckage of Holowan, quite surprised and perplexed by the scenario that had inexplicably just occurred (and perhaps surprised that he was still alive).

While it's unfortunate that such an epic and intimidating bounty hunting like IG-88 could lose a target of such high value (in more ways than one), seeing a new species in Star Wars with such a crazy amount of power is still pretty exciting. However, aside from this particular Grand-Engineer, it looks as though they're a fairly removed and non-confrontational people, similar to that of the Watchers of the Marvel Universe, and thus don't leave much of an impact nor shift the status quo in any meaningful way at large. In any case, hopefully IG-88 will have more success on his next hunt.
