The quality of Star Wars video games has not necessarily been poor since the Disney era began, with Battlefront II, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Orderand Squadrons all being great games; however, there simply has not been enough of them. That looks set to change with EA's Star Wars distribution rights no longer being exclusive, and there are many directions that the next slate of video games can go in.

Excluding the likes of a third Battlefront or a Fallen Order sequel, there are so many fascinating ideas that have not been explored in a canon video game yet, or in canon in general, and would make for a fantastic playing experience for fans.

Troops

The Battlefront games under EA are almost exclusively online multiplayer experiences, with only one short five/six-hour campaign between the two games. In general, games that focus on ground troops in their own exclusive narrative are uncommon.

It is a fascinating concept, especially after all the years of extended canon content like The Clone Wars which have added so much depth to the clones. Whether the game focuses on the clones like Republic Commando, or delves into the troops of the Empire, Rebel Alliance, or First Orderexamining the psyche of these troops during parts of the war that movies do not convey would be great.

The High Republic

A High Republic game is pretty much inevitable. Lucasfilm and Disney are going all out on the project, which is already off to a fantastic start with the novels and comics.

Exactly which part of the High Republic the game would focus on, what the narrative would be, and what known characters would be involved is unknown; the project is in its infancy after all. Nevertheless, a game in the era is bound to come and is bound to be brilliant.

The Old Republic

Of course, before the High Republic was even incepted in the minds of  Star Wars story creatives, the Old Republic was a beloved era amongst the fandom and one for which exploration was clamored.

There is currently The Old Republic MMORPG; however, it is not canon. A canon game in the era, whether that be a remake or remaster of KoTOR or a completely new story, is unlikely given the High Republic, but would still be welcomed by many fans.

Mandalorians

The popularity of the Mandalorians is at an all-time high. Between the Siege of Mandalore and the two seasons of The Mandalorian, as well as all the other animated canon brilliance on Mandalore, Mandalorian stories are consistently some of Star Wars' best.

A video game focusing on the Mandalorians and Mandalore at one point or another seems like a no-brainer. The focus could be on a post-Clone Wars pre-Rebels Mandalore, or even ancient Mandalore with its warrior ideals. Given the violence and skill of Mandalorians, it would likely be incredible to play.

Ancient Jedi

If there is one aspect of the canon that is seriously lacking thus far - although it should be noted it is only a few years old, so not everything should be fleshed out at this point - it is in the Jedi and Sith of the past.

A game focusing on the ancient Jedi, perhaps the first Jedi, or perhaps Jedi at the time of the great war with the Sith, would be great. Not only would the game be most likely fun to play, but the narrative has so much potential to add a lot of brilliance to the canon's timeline.

The Sith

Speaking of the Sith, there is no doubt they deserve their own game; in fact, fans had begged for a solely Sith-based game for years even before the new canon, with The Forced Unleashed being the best example of it to date.

There are so many iconic Sith throughout Galactic history, from Darth Bane to Darth Plagueis to Darth Revan, simply picking a point in history would suffice as long as there was a deserving narrative that gives more meat to the canon Sith bones and does justice to the unreal potential of the Sith mythology.

Bounty Hunting

There is actually a dedicated bounty hunting game in the form of Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, which, while still a Legends game, was re-released for the PS4. But the new canon deserves its own, and now may be the best time for it.

Bounty Hunter focuses on Jango Fett, but there are so many options out there. There could be an original character created for the game, or one of the many greats like Boba Fett, Cad Bane, Bossk, Aurra Sing, and many more could be picked. A bounty hunter game could work in any era and does not need a massively complex story to be excellent.

Organized Crime

Organized crime in the Galaxy does have bounty hunting within it, but is so much more. Bounty hunters would only be a small part of a game that focused on the great crimelords and syndicates across the Galaxy.

While a game looking at the Hutts, the state of crime pre-Clone War in the outer rim, or post-Empire would be great, everyone has wanted a Maul-based game for years now. A game revolving around the Crimson Dawn, filling in the gaps between the Siege of Mandalore and Solo, or between Solo and Rebels, would be such a treat.

Exploration

Dr. Cheli Lona Aphra is one of the best original characters introduced into the Disney-era of Star Wars canon thus far, and she has not even made her way on screen yet. She brings to life a fascinating concept for the franchise, exploration.

It is something fans hear so many characters talk about but rarely get to see. Luke explored the Galaxy post-original trilogy, looking for Sith artifacts and knowledge in the Force, while Dr. Aphra's story is pretty much Indiana Jones meets Star Wars. Seeing an open-world game where players get to explore the Galaxy, examine lore and artifacts, with a narrative involved, would be pretty incredible.

The Force

The Force is one of the most interesting aspects of Star Wars. It seems like fans know a decent amount about the mysterious energy field, but the fact of the matter is everyone likely only knows a modicum of the potential lore behind it.

One of the Force's best explorations came in Yoda's journey in The Clone Wars, and the Obi-Wan series could do something similar. A game dedicated to the microbiotic world like one of George Lucas' sequel trilogy ideas, or even following a character like Luke as he examines the Force, would be great. It is a topic that will never be boring, but also one which has never had a game dedicated solely to it, which understandable given the complexities, although it is still something fans would love.
