The latest Star Wars streaming series, Andor, introduced yet another lovable droid into the ensemble of a galaxy far, far away. B2EMO, Maarva’s dryly hilarious droid who’s afraid to be alone, has quickly joined R2-D2, C-3PO, BB-8, and reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO in rankings of the Star Wars universe’s most beloved droid characters.

But not every droid in the Star Wars universe is likable. From bounty hunter IG-88 to the Separatists’ nefarious (if useless) battle droids, there are plenty of villainous droids that Star Wars fans hate.

10 IG-88

The scene from The Empire Strikes Back in which Darth Vader hires bounty hunters to track down the Millennium Falcon made Star Wars history as the live-action debut of Boba Fett. But it introduced a bunch of other awesome bounty hunter characters, too, from Bossk to Dengar to killer droid IG-88.

Whereas hired guns like Fett and Dengar and Din Djarin have a human element that makes them sympathetic, IG-88 is just an emotionless killing machine.

9 Battle Droids

General Grievous with two battle droids in The Clone Wars

Rather than bringing back the familiar Imperial Stormtroopers, George Lucas came up with a different kind of expendable cannon fodder for the prequel trilogy. Instead of sending armored soldiers after the Grand Army of the Republic, the Separatists designed their own line of killer cyborgs known as “battle droids.”

The lunky, spindly battle droids are the furthest thing from the unstoppable Terminators. These droids are ultimately pretty endearing, purely because of how useless they are in battle and how easy they are to defeat. They’re the underdogs of the Clone Wars.

8 IG-11

IG-11 with two blasters in The Mandalorian

When IG-11 was first introduced in The Mandalorian’s pilot episode, fans instantly found the emotionless killer android to be a despicable villain, because he was ready to kill Grogu when he and Mando found the little green baby. Fortunately, Mando had more of a conscience, so he shot IG-11 in the head to save “The Child.”

Against all odds, IG-11 achieved redemption and won over fans when he returned at the end of season 1. After being reprogrammed, IG-11 was willing to give his own life to ensure Grogu’s safety.

7 Mouse Droids

When it comes to droids in the Star Wars universe, the smaller they are, the cuter fans will find them. Mouse droids are the little robots that wheel around Imperial facilities and quietly get on with the Empire’s busywork. They’re easily spooked by the roar of a Wookiee, and flee at the first sign of danger.

While mouse droids work for the Empire and serve the evil demands of the Emperor, they’re not malicious by nature; they’re fun, friendly, and keep to themselves.

6 BD-1

Cal Kestis, the Order 66 survivor at the heart of the fan-favorite video game Jedi: Fallen Order, is joined in his quest by his trusty droid sidekick BD-1. As Cal gets deeper and deeper into his dangerous interstellar mission, BD-1 sticks by his side.

With his spark, energy, little hind legs, and innocent eyes, BD-1 is like a robotic dog. And like a real dog, he’s man’s best friend (in this case, the man is Cal).

5 C-3PO

C-3PO on board Tantive IV in Star Wars

C-3PO is a staple of the Star Wars universe and one of the few characters who appeared in every single installment of the Skywalker saga. He’s a protocol droid who was created by Anakin Skywalker and stuck around for every major event in the next half-century of the galaxy’s tumultuous political history.

Some fans find Threepio irritating, because he constantly complains and rarely offers any solutions. He’s incredibly helpful when something needs translating or Ewoks need to be fooled by a false prophet, but he’s completely useless in any other situation – especially if there’s danger involved.

4 BB-8

BB8

The sequel trilogy was wildly polarizing among the Star Wars fan base, but from Babu Frik to the Porgs, these movies added a ton of adorable new characters to the ensemble. One of the cutest and most lovable characters introduced in the sequels is BB-8, Poe Dameron’s plucky droid companion who joined Rey on her first intergalactic adventure.

BB-8 is extremely protective of the people he cares about. He lashes out at Finn when he catches him wearing Poe’s jacket and he uses a blowtorch as a middle finger to deflect insults.

3 K-2SO

K-2SO in the desert in Rogue One

When Cassian Andor was introduced as a diehard Rebel spy in Rogue One, he was joined by K-2SO, an Imperial droid that had been reprogrammed to work for the Rebellion. Alan Tudyk’s deadpan line deliveries gave the character a wonderfully dry sense of humor.

After the first season of Andor showed how ruthless these Imperial droids can be with their original coding, K-2 seems even more friendly, warm-hearted, and lovable by comparison.

2 B2EMO

Cassian talks to B2EMO in Andor

From Luthen Rael to Dedra Meero to Syril Karn, the first season of Andor has introduced a bunch of captivating new human characters into the Star Wars ensemble. And in spite of the show’s dark, gritty tone, it also introduced one of the franchise’s most adorable droids.

B2EMO is the A.I. assistant of Cassian Andor’s adoptive mother, Maarva. After Maarva passed away, B2EMO delivered one of the most heartbreaking and vulnerable lines in Star Wars history: “I don’t want to be alone.”

1 R2-D2

R2-D2 in The Phantom Menace

Without a doubt, the most lovable droid in a galaxy far, far away is R2-D2. He might have a cheeky attitude and he rarely follows orders, but Artoo is fiercely loyal to his closest loved ones, from fellow droid C-3PO to Jedi companions like Anakin and Luke.

No droid is more endearing to Star Wars fans than R2-D2. Ben Burtt managed to create a rounded character that audiences have adored for decades with nothing more than beeps and whirs.
