Star Wars: The Last Jedi co-star Laura Dern would like to learn more about the past of her Vice Admiral Holdo. It was always going to be tough for the new Star Wars movies to live up to the reputation of the original trilogy. Even creator George Lucas struggled with the immense legacy of the series with his prequel trilogy, the quality of which is a hotly debated issue to this day – except for the general consensus that Jar Jar Binks is really terrible.

On the whole, both J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens and Gareth Edwards' Rogue One received good reviews, though fans still took issue with plot points in both movies. Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi, however, has proved incredibly divisive. Critics praised it as the best Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back, while some fans vocally derided the storyline, the movie's treatment of Luke Skywalker and the reveal of Rey's parents. The dust has somewhat settled around the movie at this point, but the controversies surrounding it are likely to be argued for years to come.

The Last Jedi introduced viewers to Laura Dern's Vice Admiral Holdo, a key figure in the resistance who clashes with Poe Dameron. Holdo is last seen sacrificing herself to buy the rebels time to escape, though some fans argue Holdo might have escaped her ship before the fateful jump. Speaking with The Evening Standard, Dern gives her support to the theory, if only so she can come back again.

This is the message to send to the world: I am absolutely comfortable with that theory. I’m thrilled to be a hero but I remember a long time ago, someone saying, ‘No one dies in space’.

Dern had a lot of fun working on The Last Jedi and is particularly keen to learn some more of Holdo's past, stating "I’m eager to learn about the future — or the past — of this character only because I loved playing her so much it would be heartbreaking not to have an experience of playing her again."

It seems unlikely Holdo was intended to escape in The Last Jedi, so it might feel like a cop out if the next adventure reveals she bailed at the last moment. That said, the movie didn't have much time to dive into Holdo's background, so maybe there is room to explore her past. The recent canon novel Leia, Princess Of Alderaan is a prequel set before the events of A New Hope, where a young Leia first gets involved with the resistance and becomes friends with Holdo. It provides some interesting background on the friendship between the two, but it's unknown if Star Wars IX helmer Abrams has any interest in bringing Holdo back again. Given the amount of characters he'll have to service in the next adventure, it feels unlikely.

It's typically the case with an Abrams movie or production that very little is revealed while it's being prepped, but it will be interesting to see how the movie will deal with the revelations of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The script for Episode IX is already complete and is expected to start filming in July, so it will be particularly interesting to see if it addresses some fan complaints from the previous movie.
