A massive publication initiative is coming for the Star Wars franchise, revealing a new unseen era in the Star Wars universe. Thanks to large crossover plans featuring several books and comics (including Marvel and IDW), the High Republic will be unveiled to fans, featuring an era about 200 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and the rest of the Skywalker Saga.

With the massive success of the Disney+ series The Mandalorianfans may be wondering if the High Republic stories being told will feature the history of the Mandalore, its incredible warriors, and culture. Here's what we know about the High Republic and the possibilities of seeing many more Mandos.

The High Republic, previously labeled as Project Luminous, is a large scale event that will see the Jedi Order in its prime. While the Skywalker Saga shows its decline, destruction, and failed rebirth, The High Republic stories will actually feature Jedi at the top of their game, protecting the galaxy as true guardians of peace and justice. They will be aiding the Republic in their shared goals for peace, as well as helping it expand into the Outer Rim, which at this point in their history has still yet to be fully explored and colonized. They will also be facing new frightening threats such as the Nihil, a group of Viking-esque raiders that supposedly have the ability to manipulate hyperspace in dangerous ways. Lucasfilm has also promised other threats will be made known as well. Does this mean that the Mandalorians, known for their conflicts with the Jedi in the past, will make an appearance?

Jedi Mandalorian War

It may be disheartening for Mando fans to learn that the answer is probably not. Much of the Mandalorian history came from Dark Horse Comics, like Tales of the Jedi, following the Jedi-Sith War (which featured some heavy Mandalorian involvement). However, much of those tales are now non-canon after Disney purchased the Star Wars franchise, giving it a clean slate as of 2014 as far as books and comics were concerned.

While there have been references in the official Star Wars canon to Jedi and Mandalorians warring with one another, those wars were fought much earlier than the time period of the High Republic, thousands of years earlier during the Old Republic. 200 years prior to Phantom Menace more than likely means that the people of Mandalore are either at war with one other and ravaging their own planet, or on the path to peace that fans see during days of the Clone Wars, before the warrior culture resumed after the Clone Wars' conclusion and the dawn of the Empire. However, there may be a spark of hope for a little bit of Mandalorian elements to come up during the High Republic. The Darksaber could make an appearance.

Fans of Clone Wars, Rebelsand The Mandalorian should be pretty familiar with the legendary Darksaber, an ancient weapon constructed by Tarre Vizla, the first Mandalorian to ever be inducted into the Jedi Order. The saber is one of a kind, featuring an all-black plasma blade. After his clan liberated the saber from the Jedi Temple after Tarre's death, the blade then fell into the hands of Tarre's descendant Pre Vizla, leader of the Mandalorian terrorist group Death Watch. After Vizla's death, the saber came into the possession of Darth Maul, Pre's killer. The saber was then rescued years later by Mandalorian Sabine Wren, who gave it to Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze to help unite the Mandalorian clans with her as their new leader.

From this point on it is somewhat unclear as to how Imperial Moff Gideon got his hands on the saber as seen at the first season conclusion of The Mandalorian, however, it may have to do with an event referenced as the Night of a Thousand Tears, supposedly where the Empire decimated as large number of Mandalorians, forcing the survivors to go underground.

Here's where the hope lies: while Vizla constructed the Darksaber over a thousand years ago prior to the Battle of Yavin, it is unknown when his clan liberated from the Jedi Temple after his death. It's a possibility that fans could see Clan Vizla sneak into the Jedi Temple in order to retrieve the famed blade during the time of the High Republic. Perhaps in the Marvel or IDW comics series? Here's hoping. However, beyond that, fans shouldn't expect to see armies of Mandalorians heading into battle against the Jedi. At least for now, that's not something that will be seen at this point in time in the Star Wars universe.

The Star Wars: High Republic books and comics will start to release this August.
