Warning: contains spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic #8.

The latest Star Wars: The High Republic comic definitively proves the light side of the Force is stronger than the dark side. The history of the Star Wars galaxy is one of unceasing conflict between two different aspects of the Force. As Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni explained in The Art of the Mandalorian, "The Force naturally exists in balance; that balance is thrown out when someone chooses to give in to their fears and then spirals out of control making selfish choice after selfish choice. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering."

The battle between the two different sides of the Force is demonstrated most spectacularly in the unceasing war between the Jedi and the Sith. The Jedi stand for the light side of the Force, the Sith embrace the dark side, and there can be no compromise between the two; the Jedi drove the Sith to the brink of extinction, and the Sith returned the favor in a series of Jedi Purges, culminating in the reign of Emperor Palpatine. The conflict between the two is usually won in demonstrations of Force power or lightsaber duels.

But Star Wars: The High Republic #8, by Cavan Scott and Ario Anindito, is a unique exception to this rule; it sees the light and dark sides of the Force pitted against one another directly. On the one hand, there is the dark side "root-mind" of the Drengir, a malevolent plant-species who were ancient allies of the Sith - and who even the Sith could not destroy. On the other, there is the Force Meld created by Avar Kriss, that allows all the Jedi to bond together in the Force. The Drengir unwisely attempt to absorb Avar into their shared root-mind, bringing the two opposing forces into conflict on a fundamental level. And the winner... is the light side of the Force.

Avar Kriss Force Meld

The Force Meld has always been seen as the greatest Jedi power, and Star Wars: The High Republic #8 confirms it is greater than its dark side equivalent. As Avar Kriss explains it, the reason for the light side's triumph in this battle is simple; the Force is life, and the Jedi fight for life while the Drengir seek only to kill and destroy. The point is emphasized by the Jedi's decision to spare the Great Progenitor, the creature who lies at the heart of the now-defunct root-mind of the dark-side predators.

This is a unique confrontation between the two different aspects of the Force, unlike anything seen in Star Wars to date, not least because it lines up such pure, equivalent versions of the dark side and light side's power. Star Wars: The High Republic #8 proves without a doubt that the light side of the Force is stronger than the darkness, explaining why those who seek the power of the dark side - be they Drengir or Sith - will always be defeated in the end.
