Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The High Republic #8
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' The High Republic, it seems as though the Jedi of this Star Wars era were permitted to engage in a form of romance. While this may seem surprising due to the secret nature of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker's marriage to Padmé Amidala, the Jedi of the High Republic were apparently allowed to engage in certain forms of romantic relationships, which is referenced in this new issue (albeit with some key limitations and provisions).
In The High Republic #8 from writer Cavan Scott and artist Ario Anindito, the Jedi of the High Republic are in the midst of a major battle with the Drengir, plant-based creatures of the dark side who have been unleashed to corrupt the entire galaxy. The Drengir's power is so great that they've actually motivated a temporary alliance between the Jedi Order and the criminal Hutt clans to keep the Outer Rim safe. In this latest issue, Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis arrives on the scene to provide aid to Master Sskeer and the Jedi forces. However, she's also joined by her new ally Jedi Master Orla Jareni, a Wayseeker who follows the will of the Force over the mandates of the Jedi Order.
Interestingly enough, Sskeer and Jareni apparently need no introduction to one another, as Jedi Master Jareni references a time from their shared past when she and the Trandoshan Jedi Master were apparently intimate with one another. While it's certainly something the younger Trennis doesn't necessarily want to hear, it doesn't come as a surprise, nor is it seen as some sort of infraction against the Jedi Code. Instead, it's treated as a normal occurrence that could happen with any Jedi of the High Republic should they so choose. As a result, it seems as though this type of romance was permitted by the Jedi Order so long as there weren't any attachments formed in the aftermath.
While the future Jedi Order of the prequel trilogy of films was definitely more rigid in its mandates, teachings, and viewpoints, it stands to reason that this allowance for Jedi romance still stood as well, though it was most likely discouraged. Due to the necessity of avoiding attachments, it makes sense why Anakin's marriage to Padmé had to be kept secret, seeing as how their relationship was built on a desire to maintain and protect their love (which clearly came with risks like it being a major contributor to Anakin's downfall). Likewise, even during the High Republic era, the bond formed between Jedi Marshall Avar Kriss and Jedi Master Elzar Mann was kept somewhat hidden, and it also created problems such as when Mann wanted to take their friendship further.
In any case, temporary and surface-level Jedi romance was apparently permitted by the Jedi Order so long as lasting attachments weren't formed afterward. As a result, it probably wasn't encouraged due to the inherent risks despite still being allowed. Regardless, it's certainly an interesting dynamic that's been revealed and highlighted for the Jedi, if only to provide a humorous scene in this latest High Republic issue set in Star Wars' past.
