Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: The High Republic #11 ahead!

Star Wars: The High Republic #11 may be bringing back a terrifying Force ability from Legends. The groundbreaking series has already restored much of the Star Wars lore lost in Legends, and this issue follows that pattern. Calling back to the novel Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor, Jedi in this issue face something they've never seen before... the Dark.

The High Republic transmedia initiative began in January of 2021 and tells the story of the Jedi Order 200 years before the Star Wars films. The series digs deep into the complicated history of the Jedi and the nature of the Living Force. The latest issue of Marvel's The High Republic comic series follows Jedi Keeve Trennis and Terec as they infiltrate a terrorist cell. Their cover is blown, and the Nihil unleash a mysterious force that reduces one Jedi to dust as the other breaks down crying. The effects and description of this force are quite reminiscent of the Legends title, Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor by Matthew Stover After Disney bought out Star Wars in 2012, all books and comics written before that time were removed from canon and deemed "Legends," including Shadows of Mindor.

The novel chronicles one of Luke's adventures after the events of Return of the Jedi, in which he encounters the Sith prophet, Shadowspawn. The terrifying alchemist obsesses over a universal force that lies beyond all of existence. This power is known simply as "The Dark." Although there is little detail about the mysterious entity in The High Republic, it seems to be reintroducing the Dark from Shadows of Mindor. The Dark is essentially the nothingness at the end of the universe; it is the absence of all life, energy, and matter. For the Jedi, this notion is terrifying, as their entire faith is built on the omnipresent Force. Shadowspawn taps into this void to unlock horrific abilities, including immortality, mind control, and the deletion of human souls. Upon peering into the Dark, Luke is traumatized. His most fundamental value is uprooted, and he isn't the same for the rest of the novel. In the end, Luke turns the Dark against his enemy, obliterating his body. In The High Republic #11 by Cavan Scott and Georges Jeanty, the effects of the unnamed force are too similar to be a coincidence.

When unleashed upon the Jedi, the weapon appears to turn Terec body inside out. As Keeve watches, she has a complete mental breakdown. Sobbing, she hides in a corner, saying, "There is only fear," and "The thing in that box... shouldn't exist." Equally terrifying is the fact that the Jedi Masters coming to rescue them can't sense the presence of either Jedi. Even the cover seems to suggest that this entity really is the Dark from Legends, depicting Terec floating in an empty void. This image calls astute readers' attention to Luke's experience in the Dark when he saw the souls of individuals like blinking lights in an empty plane.

If Star Wars really is bringing the Dark back from Legends, this will be a huge change for the franchise. It will mean that the Force is not the supreme power of the universe. It will mean that the Jedi religion is conceptually wrong. Will the Jedi of the High Republic hide from the void? Will they somehow overcome it? Star Wars fans will have to wait for the December issue to peer deeper into The Dark.
