Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The High Republic #3.

In the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Star Wars: The High Republic series, the newly appointed Jedi Marshal Avar Kriss proves her worth as leader of the High Republic's Starlight Beacon. A darkness is rising, and a handful of Jedi under her direction have become compromised. As such, Avar Kriss takes matters into her own hands in the third issue.

In the previous two issues from writer Cavan Scott and artist Ario Anindito, the High Republic's brand new Starlight Beacon has just been brought online, serving as a shining light of hope from which the Republic and Jedi Order can monitor the newly colonized Outer Rim territories, offering support and security during this time of peace. However, new threats have made themselves known, including the Great Disaster, the marauders known as the Nihil, and new dangers in the dark side of the Force yjay are seen in this issue. Much to Jedi Master Avar Kriss' surprise, the Jedi Order chose her to become Starlight's new Marshal, and this latest issue provides the first true test of her new role in the Outer Rim.

Things have not been going well for the team of Jedi that the new Marshal sent to investigate a derelict ship that had been raided by the Nihil. For one thing, something is seriously wrong with Jedi Master Sskeer, who's become aggressive and lost in the Force, brutally killing the lone Nihil they found. When their investigation took them to the nearby planet of Sedri Minor, the Jedi known as Ceret vanished, though his psychically-connected twin Terec started to lose his mind as a result of whatever was happening to Ceret. Jedi Knight Keeve Trennis eventually found Ceret trapped underground and in the throes of an infection born of the dark side, and she soon found herself face to face with the Drengir, the organic dark side creatures responsible. Thankfully, Marshal Kriss arrives after hearing Trennis' calls for help, slicing one of the large monsters in half with a single lightsaber strike.

Not only that, but before she felled one of the Drengir, Kriss was very direct with Master Sskeer. Clearly, something is very wrong with the Jedi Master, and Avar Kriss wisely benches Sskeer as a result. Furthermore, Kriss uses her strong connection in the Force to bring Ceret back to the light, helping the Twins resist the corruption of the Drengir by adding her own power to theirs. However, the conflict on Sedri Minor is far from over, as the Drengir managed to infect Sskeer through Terec, turning him into their dark and lethal puppet.

Even so, Jedi Marshal Kriss has already proven herself quite well as the leader of the Jedi Order's efforts in the Outer Rim, taking decisive action and making wise choices while also leading by example with heroics and bravery of her own. As Marvel's High Republic continues, it's going to be very interesting to see where Avar Kriss leads Starlight Beacon and its Jedi next, especially with the rise of the Drengir threatening to corrupt even the strongest of the Order's Jedi Knights.
