Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca #5

In the latest issue of Star Wars: Han Solo & Chewbacca series, the infamous smuggler Han Solo just received his own iconic Darth Vader/Luke Skywalker twist (albeit reversed). Having grown up on his own as a scavenger for the majority of his childhood, Han was surprised to be reunited with his father Ovan so many years later. However, the new issue confirms that things are not as they initially seemed.

In previous issues of Han Solo & Chewbacca from writer Marc Guggenheim and artist David Messina, Jabba the Hutt hired Solo and his Wookiee first mate to retrieve an urn containing the ashes of one of his greatest rivals. Taking place not long after the events of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Han was still in the gangster's good graces. Joined by the Rodian Greedo (who definitely didn't shoot first), the trio traveled to Han's homeworld of Corellia, the last known location of the urn. However, collecting their prize proved to be much more difficult than anticipated. That being said, Han Solo's reunion with his father Ovan was certainly a surprise along with his offer to help them, seeking to make up for abandoning his son.

While it seemed as though Ovan was the real deal, the new Han Solo & Chewbacca #5 reveals his true colors by him stealing the urn and Millennium Falcon from his "son". Likewise, Solo's fake father is also revealed to be a fugitive known as Corbus Tyra who had planned to con Han out of the urn after hearing about Solo's job for Jabba. As such, it truly is the reverse of the classic Darth Vader as Luke's father twist with the reveal that Tyra was never actually Han's father. As such, Solo is more than a little angered that he was played.

Han Solo's Fake Father Betrays Him

While Han Solo being bamboozled with a false family reunion is rather tragic, the new twist does help establish the self-serving smuggler audiences are introduced to in A New Hope. Having very limited people in his life whom he could trust aside from Chewbacca, it's no wonder why Han was initially more focused on helping only himself at the start of the original trilogy. He was abandoned and betrayed far too many times to rely on anyone (or be conversely relied upon).

It's going to be exciting to see where Han Solo & Chewbacca goes next, especially after this new Star Wars issue left Han shot in the chest and Chewbacca imprisoned. There's also the fact that the Millennium Falcon is still stolen by Han Solo's fake father who's now been captured by a marshal. Han Solo & Chewbacca #5 is on sale now.
