The Book of Boba Fett included a tense moment where Grogu decides to return to Din Djarin’s side rather than become a Jedi—but what if he had stayed with Luke? How much different would Star Wars be if Grogu had chosen to keep Yoda’s lightsaber and complete his training as a Jedi? If he had stayed with Luke, the Mandalorian would be solo once more. What’s more, Grogu would become Luke’s first student in his new Jedi Order—which could have a profound impact on the sequels of Star Wars.

If Grogu stayed with Luke rather than return to the Mandalorian, he would quickly learn how to better control the Force. He’d also learn to properly wield a lightsaber. Under Luke’s tutelage, Grogu would eventually become a powerful Jedi Knight in the New Republic. On the other hand, the Mandalorian would likely go back to bounty hunting alone. Without Grogu to give him a reason to fight, it’s possible that he wouldn’t even take part in the upcoming civil war for Mandalore in the Mandalorian season 3. But the two could still reunite during the sequel trilogy—and Grogu might be able to talk at that point.

Grogu Would Become A Jedi Prodigy

During The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu seemed to quickly pick up everything Luke was teaching him. Despite his thoughts dwelling elsewhere on the Mandalorian, Grogu was able to master jumping using the Force. He was also proficient in avoiding blaster fire from a training remote. The only hurdle he had yet to overcome was his attachment to Din. But if he had let go of the Mandalorian and stayed with Luke his Jedi powers would have grown exponentially.

In the years to come, Grogu would continue to grow in his knowledge of the Force. The future of Luke’s Jedi Order would be altered now that Grogu is a key member of it. It’s possible that Grogu’s proficiency with the Force would outpace the other Padawans Luke recruits—to the point where Grogu becomes a teacher or a Jedi Knight himself. But it’s certain that he would be one of the most pivotal figures in the Academy—up until Ben Solo joins.

The Mandalorian Would Go Back To Bounty Hunting

While Grogu continues to learn and grow in the Force with Luke, the Mandalorian would go back to his old bounty-hunting job alone. He may become embittered by the fact that he left Grogu with Luke, but he’d resolutely push through his sorrow and continue his work. The Mandalorian season 3 would play out drastically different than it will. And the small cockpit in the Mandalorian’s new Naboo starfighter would remain empty—or be used to store Din’s bounties. But Grogu wouldn’t be with him for some time.

It’s hard to say whether Din would still go through with the civil war in the Mandalorian season 3. His motives for going to war against Bo-Katan aren’t clear from the trailer, but it is clear that Grogu is with him. Perhaps he believes that he must retake Mandalore in order to establish a new sect of Mandalorians in which he and Grogu can thrive in. But if Grogu ended up staying with Luke in order to become a Jedi, it’s likely that the Mandalorian civil war in season 3 would never happen.

Grogu Would Duel Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren in The Rise of Skywalker.

The Book of Boba Fett takes place in 9 ABY, while Ben Solo’s destruction of Luke’s temple takes place in 28 ABY. That means that if Grogu chose to become a Jedi, he’d have almost 20 years of relative peace while training with Luke before disaster befell him. Assuming that Grogu is among the few Padawans who survive the initial destruction of the Temple by Ben Solo, he would likely join the other surviving Padawans in hunting down Ben to bring him to justice.

Along with Luke’s remaining Padawans, Grogu would face off against Ben Solo in order to avenge his friends that were killed in Luke’s Temple on Ossus. In canon, all the remaining Padawans were killed attempting to bring Ben to justice. But with Grogu and his abilities, it’s possible that they all survive. Though, it’s difficult to imagine that their combined force would be enough to take down Ben Solo. The most likely outcome is that Ben Solo still escapes and becomes Kylo Ren—but Grogu and the other Padawans remain alive.

Luke’s Jedi Order May Have Been Saved

With Grogu and the other Padawans alive—Luke wouldn’t feel totally defeated by the betrayal of Ben Solo. He would still blame himself for allowing Snoke to influence his nephew, but he wouldn’t feel the need to exile himself and search for the first Jedi Temple. Rather than abandon them, he would carry on with his Academy and piece it back together with the help of his remaining Padawans. This would be a journey of personal importance for Grogu—having known Ben Solo well during his time at the Temple.

During this period, Grogu would be at a crucial tipping point in his journey as a Jedi. He would need to be careful not to give into his emotions of rage and revenge for his friends that Kylo killed. Their second duel would mirror that of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan. Two Jedi who were once friends clash against one another because one committed an unforgivable act. Though it's difficult to say who would win.

Grogu Might Have Replaced Rey As The Sequels’ Protagonist

Mando and Grogu flying through the sky in The Mandalorian

Instead of Rey’s relationship with Kylo, the movies would focus on Grogu and his history with Ben at Luke’s Temple. Because Grogu would be such a compelling character as a Jedi, it’s possible that the sequels could focus on Luke and Grogu as they attempt to bring Kylo Ren to justice. But with Luke past his prime and only a few Padawans left to fight, they would ultimately be no match for the powerful Knights of Ren. Instead, Grogu may have to call in an old friend to assist them.

Din Djarin would be pushing sixty during the time of the sequels—almost a decade younger than Cad Bane when he died. While the Mandalorian’s moves may have dulled over the years, there’s no doubt that he would have a few tricks up his sleeve to help Grogu take down Kylo Ren. Grogu and Din’s reunion would be bittersweet after the decades they’d been apart, and it’s possible that their combined force would be enough to bring Kylo Ren to justice—closing out the sequels in a very different fashion. Regardless, Grogu chose to remain with the Mandalorian in the Book of Boba Fett rather than tread the path of the Jedi.
