Star Wars would look very different if George Lucas had never sold Lucasfilm earlier this decade. Disney purchased Lucasfilm, and the Star Wars saga with it, back in 2012, and fans have been treated to a wide array of films, television series, comics, and more. with Disney making their money back following their huge $4.05 billion purchase.

It's now been 7 years since Disney purchased Lucasfilm, in which time they've released a full sequel trilogy and two anthology movies, many of which have proved to be extremely divisive. For all Lucas was maligned by Star Wars fans towards the end of his tenure after the Prequels, many now wish he'd never sold the company at all. But what would Star Wars look like if he hadn't?

George Lucas' sequel trilogy would have put the midi-chlorians center stage, as well as the Whills, powerful force users introduced in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. To use Lucas' words, "[The next three Star Wars films] were going to get into a microbiotic world.," which obviously would have delved deeper into the lore behind the Force and how certain individuals channel it. In addition, there was already a plan that would have seen an older Luke Skywalker take on an apprentice by the name of Kira, with the focus on a generation of teenagers. However, Luke would've also trained Leia in the ways of the Force in Lucas' sequel trilogy, which would've then culminated with Luke's death in Star Wars 9.

Also worth consideration is where exactly spin-off films would factor into Lucas' plans for the series, if there were to be any at all. While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story proved successful, Solo: A Star Wars Story did not quite reach that same level. However, Lucas himself had reportedly been developing a spin-off movie about Han Solo with Lawrence Kasdan prior to selling Lucasfilm, so it's possible this still would've been made, although it likely would've had a very different outcome, but perhaps no less controversial, since fans weren't sold on the idea to begin with.

On the TV front, it was already a given that there was more story to tell from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and surely Lucas and Dave Filoni would have given fans the conclusion they so desperately hoped for. The series was abruptly cancelled following the Disney acquisition, but as of San Diego Comic Con 2018, Disney did announce that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would get its final season to tie up loose ends, but this is something fans would have undoubtedly seen long ago had Lucas not sold the franchise. As for live-action TV goes, Lucas had previously spent a long time attempting to get the TV show Star Wars: Underworld off the ground, parallels of which can be seen in The Mandalorian, so it's likely that would've happened much sooner than 2019 as well.

Had George Lucas kept Star Wars for himself not only would the franchise appear far different from what it looks like today, but the rate at which audiences received Star Wars content would surely be much slower comparatively. Many of the characters and worlds Disney has provided fans with would not exist, instead being replaced by ones from the mind of Lucas, for better or worse, although Lucas' own sequel trilogy would've been controversial too.
