Four new Star Wars Funko models are being released, to mark the 40th anniversary of George Lucas' seminal space opera. The film that fans later came to know as Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope premiered – with the simpler title of just Star Wars – on December 27, 1977. The movie quickly became synonymous with merchandise. In fact, demand for Star Wars toys became so massive that Lucasfilm resorted to selling empty toy boxes, with the pledge of filling them later.
Four decades later, Star Wars fans are spoiled for choice when it comes to Star Wars merchandise. A new Hasbro range of Porg figures was announced most recently, to tie-in with this December’s release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Funko has also unveiled its own range of products inspired by the upcoming movie.
Although the announcement of a new range of Star Wars Funko Pops hardly comes as a big surprise anymore, even the most skeptical fan will look at these new ones and quickly be impressed. The four sets, unveiled by Walmart (via StarWarsNews), recreate iconic moments from the original Star Wars using two figures apiece and plentiful detail:

The four special anniversary Funko Pops are: R2-D2 and C-3PO arriving on Tatooine with their escape pod; Han Solo facing off with Greedo in the Mos Eisley Cantina; Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader having their final duel, on the Death Star; and Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, trapped in the Death Star’s trash compactor. The detailing is impressive across the board, from the cups on the cantina table to the Dianoga creature betwixt the Skywalker siblings.
These four iconic tableaus, recreated in Funko form, will be available exclusively through Walmart. They will be released in store and online, at some point in early November 2017. Each one has a retail price of $24.82. For many fans, that’s a small price to pay for a cute recreation of an iconic scene from the film that started it all.
Sadly, though, no Star Wars fan could keep up with the seemingly never-ending onslaught of new figures inspired by that beloved galaxy far, far away. This year alone has seen special exclusive Star Wars Funko Pop ranges released to coincide with San Diego Comic Con, New York Comic Con, and Star Wars Celebration. Only the most hardened collectors manage to nab them all, with these special anniversary items being the latest tricky target for fans to seek out. If you are going to try and get one of these, good luck, and may the Force be with you.
