The lightsaber is arguably the most iconic weapon in movie history. The weapon of the Jedi and Sith touch the hearts of everyone from children to adults. Everyone has dreamed of wielding a mystical blade powered by crystals of the Force. The battle for the galaxy played out in the imaginations of fans everywhere.

Over the years, Lucasfilm has introduced several different colors for the laser-like blades. Which ones are the best? That's the question. This list will be covering all the colors featured within canon Star Wars stories. Any colors and explanations that are only featured in Legends material will not be featured.

Orange

Cal Wielding An Orange Lightsaber - Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

As bonus content for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, fans could gain access to the orange lightsaber crystal. They existed for years in Legends comics but it was the game that brought them into the new canon.

Unfortunately, orange does not have an explanation. What does it mean? What does it tell about the Force user? Unknown. It's simply an aesthetic choice the player has. However, it still counts as canon since only canon material is used in newer games.

Indigo & Magenta

Cal Wielding Magenta And Indigo - Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

In a similar fashion to orange, indigo and magenta have zero explanation. When Cal finally gets his Kyber crystal in Fallen Order, the player has several options to choose from. Magenta could be a reference to how Darth Vader's red saber looked in the foggy Cloud City setting in Empire Strikes Back? Even that sounds like a stretch.

Both indigo and magenta look great in the game though. They are nice looking colors but they definitely require more information from comics, books, or even another game.

Black

The Mandalorian Moff Gideon Baby Yoda Darksaber

Much like with purple, only one person has bonded to a Kyber crystal and resulted in black. The Darksaber was created by a Jedi Mandalorian ages ago. Unlike most colors where the center of the blade is white and the glow is the color, the Darksaber has a black center with a white glow.

It's uncertain why this blade turned back and why no others have surfaced. So for generations, the Darksaber has been passed down through leaders of Mandalore. Currently, on The Mandalorian, it is in the hands of Moff Gideon. Black is a color that always appeals: so the Darksaber is definitely another fan-favorite.

Cyan

Cal Kestis with a cyan lightsaber

Technically the first color fans ever saw in the series. In the original version of A New Hope, the lightsaber Luke is gifted sports a bright blue blade. However, the lightsaber changed color in Empire Strikes Back to a more sapphire color seen in nearly every Star Wars project since.

However, this cyan colored blade did return as an option in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order; this was likely a reference to the original A New Hope coloring. However, only canon colors are used in Fallen Order and it makes sense seeing how Ahsoka wields a bright green saber.

Yellow

Rey holds her new yellow Lightsaber in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

A more mysterious color is yellow: a hue seen only on Jedi temple guards and Rey's lightsaber. Jedi Sentinels are rare beings because they are (almost) morally unbreakable which is why they are usually tasked with being guardians of temples.

The Grand Inquisitor was a case of a Sentinel who broke; he did wield a yellow blade in his previous life. As for Rey, her yellow saber was a last-second reveal in The Rise Of Skywalker with no explanation. So no information on why she was given a yellow saber is available.

Blue

Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith

The gold-standard of lightsaber colors: Kanan Jarrus, the legendary Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jaro Tapal, Anakin Skywalker, and so many other Jedi wield this color. They prefer to use the Force more physically and are courageous. They are on the frontlines of fighting the Dark Side.

There's a reason why lightsabers have stuck around for so long. Blue was the first lightsaber color introduced to fans. Since then it has been the go-to color for most stories featuring a Jedi.

Purple

Star Wars mace windu purple lightsaber Cropped

Only one individual has been shown to wield a purple blade: Master Mace Windu. The reason for this color is...that Samuel L. Jackson asked for purple and got his wish. In canon though, the reason, though less concrete, is that the Force-user is at a perfect middle ground between light and dark.

This is somewhat shown by Mace Windu using a Sith lightsaber stance. Windu is also more dubious as a Jedi and meanspirited. The color has become a fan-favorite: when the option for a purple blade is available in a game, many take it. Many purple blades have also been made at Galaxy's Edge.

Red

Darth Vader ambushes rebels at the end of Rogue One

The signature color of the Sith and the Dark Side. In canon, a red Kyber crystal is not naturally formed like a Jedi's crystal. Actually, a Sith crystal IS a Jedi crystal! After killing a Jedi, a Sith takes the crystal from their lightsaber and performs a dark ritual.

The ritual involves taking all the pain, fear, hatred, and dark emotions that fuel a Sith and corrupting the crystal until it turns red. This process is called Bleeding and it results in the iconic red blades wielded by Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and Kylo Ren. What more can be said? The red is a perfect villainous hue and usually results in some of the best lightsabers.

Green

Liam Neeson as Qui-Gon Jinn

Wielded by the likes of Master Yoda, Qui-Gon Jinn, Ahsoka Tano, Ezra Bridger, and Luke Skywalker: green is a sign of a stronger connection to the Force. Those who let the will of the Force guide them usually end up bonded with a green saber.

Qui-Gon Jinn was the best example of this. As for looks, it usually is refreshing to see an emerald blade. Luke Skywalker was the first in the franchise to wield one (from a viewer's perspective) and it was quite a surprise in Return of the Jedi. There is also a pale green color of the blade that Ahsoka wielded during the Clone Wars.

White/Silver

Ahsoka Tano in The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5

The Bleeding effect put on a Kyber Crystal by a Sith can be removed. This purification leads to the Kyber Crystal becoming it's natural white/silver state. When used in a lightsaber, the blades come out a bright white that first debuted on Star Wars: Rebels.

The one and only showcase of these sabers come in the form of Ahsoka Tano's lightsabers. She wields them as an adult in Star Wars: Rebels and her recent show-stealing appearance on The Mandalorian. When the silver sabers were introduced, they quickly became a fan-favorite and they will return in the Star Wars: Ahsoka spin-off series.
