If you were to take all the various makes and models of droids in the Star-Wars universe, you'd probably have a legion of artificially intelligent beings that would outnumber the clone army. From your prim and proper Protocol Droids to the adaptive and inventive Astromechs, they go above and beyond your average robots.

The droids can be anything and everything in regards to occupation and purpose, but only a certain few make a name for themselves in this galaxy far, far away. We've collected 10 of the most interesting and memorable droids we know by name and reputation to show our appreciation for our mechanical friends.

Droidekas

Droideka in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

On the subject of Battle Droids, there are few that actually come off as a veritable threat. The B-1 Battle Droids are basically cannon fodder, and their blue-plated upgrades aren't much better. That being said, we'd be lying if we didn't have a certain soft spot for their rolling shielded brethren.

The Droidekas, though not the strongest droids in the world, do have some impressive tech and style when we first introduced to them in The Phantom Menace. With their mobile design and shield ability, they're definitely a step up from your typical robot soldier. Still, they're no match for some well-trained Jedi.

BB-9E

This one is more of an honorable mention than anything else, but we simply wanted to include the First Order's evil version of BB-8. Don't let his cute, soccer-ball-shaped form fool you for a minute. Though this little guy might resemble our favorite orange Astromech, he does not play for our team.

BB-9E can be seen on Snoke's ship and is presumably not the only BB unit aboard the cruiser. Being an Astromech droid, he's probably well equipped to deal with some of the cruiser's internal machinations. However, we also see him acting as a little surveillance unit when intruders are found onboard. Smart and sneaky to boot.

BD-1

Star Wars Game New Droids

One of the newest members of the Star Wars universe, BD-1 puts the BD in buddy as he acts as both companion and assistant to Cal Kestis in the newly released Jedi: Fallen Order. BD-1 has an unquenchable thirst for collecting data and scanning new areas. What better qualities to have for a journey across the galaxy?

With his bird-like gait and wide-eyed facial design, BD-1 is definitely one of the more cutely-modeled droids on our list. Though not as famous as a certain BB unit, this little guy can still use some impressive hacking skills to get his Padawan companion wherever he needs to go. Welcome to the team, little guy.

IG-11

We take you from the cute and charming droids to armed and dangerous with the infamous Assassin Droid. This trigger-happy troublemaker is a robotic bounty hunter with one goal, complete his mission and terminate his target. Even if that target is an infant alien being, the guy is still cold as steel and not afraid to pick up a blaster.

Though the droid has appeared in the original trilogy in the form of IG-88, IG-11 is a new player brought to us by Taika Waititi. His tall, lanky form is definitely a contrast to some of his heavily-armored peers, but he learns quick enough that nobody's a faster gun than a Mandalorian.

Chopper

This clunking, grunting, cantankerous smart-alec Astromech is Chopper, the droid in residence aboard the Ghost in Disney's Star Wars: Rebels. Like many of his kind, Chopper tends to most of the ship's mechanical needs, but isn't above assisting the crew on their raids and missions.

He might be the droid-world's equivalent to a crotchety old spacer, and the arms on an astromech might be offputting to one or two viewers, but you can't deny he's unforgettable. From stealing weapon caches to fooling enemy droids, Chopper does way more than just repair work in this series.

RX-24

The RX line of pilot droids was built for the Star Tours attraction at the Disney Parks, but the most famous member has a special place in our hearts and in the galaxy. Whether we fondly remember him as captain of the original Star Tours shuttle or welcome him as the new DJ at Oga's Cantina, there's no denying the charm of RX-24.

Commonly referred to as Captain Rex, this droid not only knows how to pilot a transport craft better than any X-Wing or Tie-Fighter crew, he knows how to evade capture, improvise landings, and drop sick techno beats for all his fans. What's not to love about this guy?

K2-SO

K2SO against clouds from Rogue One

How can we not add this reformed Imperial Enforcer Droid on our list? The captain said we had to... Brought to us by the phenomenal vocal chops of Alan Tudyk, K2-SO is the brutally honest droid member of the team that brought the Death Star plans into the hands of Leia's rebellion, and without-a-doubt the best part of the movie.

We love how downright snarky this droid can be. In a movie with so many dark and serious overtones, it's always awesome to get some comic relief when this giant talking tank is on screen. We're definitely upset he had to go.

BB-8

Definitely the most cherished droid in the new trilogy, BB-8 is that adorable, chirping ball of robotics we all know and love. Whether he's helping Poe Dameron escape the forces of Kylo Ren, joining Finn and Rey on a rescue mission, or simply giving us the thumbs up with his blow-torch, we can't help but smile.

Though he might be the most kid-friendly character since Jar-Jar Binks, he definitely has a larger fan base. He's got more gadgets than a swiss army knife, he's definitely more verbose than his blue and silver counterpart, and he's definitely got a place amongst the stars in our books.

R2-D2

If we're being completely honest, BB-8 wouldn't even exist without the original beeping Astromech Droid, R2-D2. Though a robot of few words (but many electronic vocalizations), he is one of the most expressive and favored characters in the original trilogy and prequels. There's little this scrappy little bucket of bolts can't do.

In his currently eight-film long career, R2-D2 has been through the wringer and more. From repairing a moving Republic cruiser while being assaulted by cannon fodder to setting a group of gun-toting battle droids ablaze, R2 might be small, but he is definitely mighty.

C-3PO

Protocol Droids are designed to be experts in "human-cyborg relations" and other etiquettes. Despite originally being built from used parts, C-3PO is perhaps the top of the Protocol line with as many functions and vocations as he has had in his decorated career. From being a simple servant droid to an assistant to an ambassador, he's earned that gold plating.

3PO is probably the most recognizable droid in all of the Star Wars universe, next to his counterpart R2-D2 of course. We have to give him our top spot for his persnickety nature, twitterpated attitude, and his ability to go above and beyond the limits of his programming.
