In the comics, Darth Maul's final fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi happened much sooner than in the main continuity. Star Wars fans who watched Star Wars Rebels likely remember the last fight between the two iconic characters. The vendetta Darth Maul had against Obi-Wan Kenobi was long-lasting. However, the final fight on Tatooine had already happened in a Legends comic long before the show.

Darth Maul was introduced in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Even though he seemed to end his story there, Maul reappeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series within the fourth season of the show. He would play a large role in that series as well as Star Wars Rebels. Often, he was seen chasing after Obi-Wan Kenobi, hoping to kill him after the way their first duel turned out. Towards the end of Rebels, the two finally have a last fight, on Tatooine.

In 2005, Marvel Comics published a graphic novel volume titled Star Wars: Visionaries. Within this volume, various artists from the creative team of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith were able to create short comic stories based on concept ideas and art that did not make the final cut of the film. This volume opens up with a story written and illustrated by Aaron McBride. Within it, Darth Maul goes to Tatooine while Luke Skywalker is a young boy - and first fights Luke's uncle Owen before he is interrupted and engaged in combat by Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Inclusion in this volume means that Maul's return and final fight with Obi-Wan were originally concepts for the third prequel film that didn't make the final script or vision. In the comic, Darth Maul is surprised to discover Luke, though he is quickly distracted by the presence of Obi-Wan. This Legends story reveals that Maul was chasing Kenobi since Attack of the Clones, having just barely missed him on Kamino. Afterwards, he followed a trajectory that fans will be very familiar with: Geonosis, Mustafar, and Polis Massa. Geonosis was the site of the battle between the Jedi Order and Count Dooku following Obi-Wan's capture. Maul came across the body of Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, before eventually going through the medical records on Polis Massa - the birth place of Luke and Leia.

This comic revealed that Maul possessed a lot of knowledge about the Skywalker family, knowing about Darth Vader's children long before Vader himself did. It also featured alternate fates for supporting Star Wars characters. In this comic, Darth Maul's hunt led him to Tatooine, where he killed Watto - the Toydarian in Mos Espa that Anakin and his mother, Shmi Skywalker worked for. Also of note is that Maul already has the appearance he would later sport in the animated series. He has a robotic lower half, replacing the legs that Obi-Wan severed. This was the second altered appearance he had in the shows, as his first was more spider-like before Maul shifted to the bipedal robotic form. While this comic is considered part of the Legends timeline and not part of current Canon continuity for the Star Wars Expanded Universe, it shows that Darth Maul's return - and his eventual final showdown with Obi-Wan Kenobi - were major concepts for the prequel trilogy's finale, long before The Clone Wars and Rebels shows featured him.
