The trailers for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker have brought Star Wars fans some pretty spectacular things to look forward to. The final installment in George Lucas's nine-film sci-fi opus will include Rey and Kylo Ren being drawn to the remnants of the second Death Star, the Resistance taking one last stand against the First Order, Lando Calrissian at the controls of the Millennium Falcon, the return of Emperor Palpatine, and Dark Rey!

That last part has given rise to a multitude of theories about Rey's descent to the Dark Side, especially given that her mentor Luke Skywalker is no longer present to prevent it. The normally pragmatic would-be Jedi may find the odds too great, and despite everything she's learned, the pull of the Dark Side too strong. Serious pontifications aside, what was with that funky lightsaber? Here are 10 hilarious Dark Rey memes to tide you over until all is revealed.

WHAT'D YOU SAY ABOUT EPISODE IX?

By now every Star Wars fan has watched (and re-watched) the teasers and regular trailers for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. And if the last and final trailer is any indication, it's going to be a mind-blowing experience. Not only do we see a fleet of Imperial Star Destroyers in a lightning storm, but we also see Rey potentially turn to the Dark Side.

Whether or not you think she actually will or that the appearance of Dark Rey is nothing more than a Force vision and red herring, the point remains that everything included in the trailers guarantees at the very least Episode IX is going to be so much more than "ok".

KYLO REN WHEN HE SAW DARK REY

Kylo Ren, the dark prince of the Star Wars Saga has been obsessing over Rey since The Force Awakens. While she first appeared to be a common scavenger from Jakku, he instantly recognized her powerful Force abilities, probably before she was even aware of just how incredible they were.

He tempted her with the promise of completing her training in The Last Jedi, appealing to her feelings of abandonment over the disappearance of her parents, but she adamantly declined. It remains to be seen whether or not Kylo Ren will get to see Dark Rey for himself in Episode IX, but we imagine he'd be more than a little excited by how badass she turned out to be.

LET THE HATE FLOW THROUGH  YOU

To some Star Wars fans, Rey has been a disappointing lead character. Undoubtedly the main hero of the new trilogy of films produced by Disney, she can come across as flat and lacking charisma. Up until she joined the Resistance, she'd lived an isolated life as a scavenger on Jakku after her parents disappeared when she was a young girl, which should have created all sorts of resentment and anger in her.

Despite being abandoned at a tender age, Rey remains optimistic in The Force Awakens, and even when Kylo Ren explains to her that her parents were junkers who sold her for drinking money in The Last Jedi, she still keeps a positive perspective. Perhaps in Rise of Skywalker, she'll finally let her cheery facade fall, and embrace the conflict surrounding her life.

SWISS ARMY LIGHTSABER

It's almost a Star Wars tradition that with each new film, some never-before-seen element gets introduced to the franchise. Whether it's a new class of ship, a new species, a new planet, or a new weapon, it continues the world-building of the films and makes the galaxy seem richer.

In the teaser trailer for Episode IX, we see Dark Rey holding what looks like two red lightsabers, only she's not. She's holding a double-bladed lightsaber that can fold in half and be released with a nifty flick of the wrist. While this looks pretty epic, it doesn't really break down logically. Then again, do flamethrowers for stormtroopers? Stars Wars has its own brand of internal logic and a lightsaber for every occasion.

DOES IT HAVE POCKETS?

There are a lot of concepts throughout the Star Wars Universe that look really cool but seem to have little practicality. This is especially true for Dark Side users. For instance, why would Count Dooku have solar sails on his starship? Because they look cool. Why would Darth Maul fight in so many layers? Because they look cool when he spins.

Dark Rey appears to have a folding double-bladed lightsaber for no other reason that it looks cool when she unfolds it; the intergalactic equivalent of doing fancy tricks with a butterfly knife. What female Star Wars fans seem to be interested in is whether or not Dark Rey's new Sith robes have pockets. Garments that exist for aesthetic purposes which also have some functionality get high marks.

COOL LIKE MAUL

Discerning Star Wars fans immediately picked up on the fact that the double-bladed lightsaber that Dark Rey is using in the Episode IX teaser trailer looks exactly like Darth Maul's from Episode I. This probably wasn't just some wild coincidence since the film is supposed to make references to every previous Star Wars film before it.

Darth Maul has proven to be one of the franchise's most beloved characters, despite his criminal under-utilization in the prequel films. While he's gone on to be included in other Star Wars media, him and his double-bladed lightsaber deserved far more screen time.

DARTH PLAGUEIS THE WISE

Star Wars fans often point to Chancellor Palpatine's use of the "Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise" in Episode III as the turning point for Anakin Skywalker's descent to the Dark Side. By telling the young Jedi that the Sith had discovered the power over life and death, Palpatine all but guaranteed Anakin would use it to try to save his wife in childbirth.

Kylo Ren had a moment in Episode VIII when he might have convinced Rey of the Dark Side's benefits, but he failed to appeal to her desperation. Perhaps if he'd explained the Dark Side could bring back her parents, rather than highlighting how they abandoned her, she might have taken the bait.

DARTH HELMET REN

There have been several theories surrounding Dark Rey's origins so far. Her appearance has been cited as a Force vision Rey has, a Force vision Kylo Ren has, and even as a dark clone that the resurrected Emperor Palpatine has created with Sith Alchemy.

Taking a cue from Space Balls, the epic sci-fi spoof, perhaps Dark Rey is simply the fantasy of Kylo Ren enacted through dolls? Darth Helmet, the hilarious villain in Space Balls conceives of a similar scenario with himself and the princess, to everyone's chagrin.

DARTH REYDAR

When a Sith Lord receives their Sith title, it's a big deal. Emperor Palpatine granted Lord Vader his "Darth" title in Episode III, as he had done with Darth Maul before him. His own master, Darth Plagueis didn't know just how accurate his pupil's name would be (Darth Sidious).

Dark Rey's appearance brings up the fact that if Rey did turn to the Dark Side, she'd presumably need an appropriate Sith title as well. With the presence of the oscillating double-bladed lightsaber she uses in the Episode IX teaser trailer, Darth Reydar seems the most appropriate.

COME TO THE DARK SIDE

In contrast to the Jedi path, which prohibits temptation and promotes an ascetic lifestyle, the Sith path actively encourages its followers to give into their desires. Those go along with everything from emotions to presumably dark chocolate cake with fudge filling.

The extremely rigid confines of the Jedi lifestyle is what makes it so difficult to follow. Jedi aren't allowed to fall in love, get married, or have children. The thought is attachment leads to possessiveness and jealousy, which are gateway emotions to anger and hatred. Join the Dark Side - they have popsicles.
