Marvel's Star Wars comic series has recruited writer/artist duo Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larocca to take over beginning this fall with issue #38. Comic book writer Jason Aaron will be ending his two-year run writing for the wildly popular Star Wars series and will be passing on the reins to Gillen and Larocca, who are best known for their work on the critically-acclaimed Darth Vader series - which follows the adventures of the Dark Lord of the Sith between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

In addition to the Darth Vader series, Gillen is best known for his creator-owned comics Phonogram and The Wicked + The Divine published by Image Comics. He has also worked on various projects for Marvel Comics including Journey into Mystery, Uncanny X-Men, and Young Avengers. Larocca, a Spanish comic book artist, is primarily known for his work on various X-Men titles, but has also worked on Ghost RiderAvengersFantastic FourSpider-Man: House of M and Heroes Reborn: The Return.

In a new post on the official Star Wars website, Gillen and Jordan D. White, an editor for Marvel Comics who has overseen the Star Wars comics since 2015, commented on the change of leadership for the series and what their aim is when the comics continue this fall. Here is what Gillen said about picking up the reins, plus a look at the cover for issue #38 with art by David Marquez:

“My aim’s simple – to do what Salva and I did with Darth Vader, but for Leia, Luke and Han. As in, chart the rise and fall of the Rebellion between A New Hope and the Empire Strikes Back, how it changes them all and how it changes the universe. So a simple aim, but as nightmarishly tricky to pull off as dropping a proton torpedo down a thermal exhaust port. But hopefully as thrilling if we pull it off. I can’t wait till you see it up. First up: the post-apocalyptic hell that remains of Jedha after the Death Star punched a hole through its mantle.”

White also had nothing but positive things to say about Gillen, who is currently writing Doctor Aphra - an ongoing comic book series started in 2016 and takes place after the conclusion of the Darth Vader series, following the character Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra (a human female archaeologist recruited by Vader after the Battle of Yavin). Here is what White said:

“Kieron is one of the best writers in comics today, with comics that span so many different styles and genres. He’s shown through the crossovers with his Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra series that he has just as great a grasp on the heroes of the Star Wars galaxy as he does on its villains (and gray-area archaeologists). And any fan of his knows he’s no stranger to the operatic saga! I could not be happier to have him taking the reins.”

With the success of the Darth Vader comics and the popularity surrounding Doctor Aphra, the future of Marvel's Star Wars series is looking bright, with Gillen and Larocca taking charge.
