Warning: contains major spoilers for Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: Jabba the Hutt #1!

Jabba the Hutt has his own version of Chewbacca's life debt in Star Wars and it is much darker. Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: Jabba the Hutt #1 features Jabba hiring Boba Fett and Deva Lompop to track down a bounty. Deva is indebted to Jabba, but her payback of that debt doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon.

When Han Solo saved Chewbacca from Imperial slavery, Chewie swore a life debt, which among Wookies is a literal debt that lasts for the duration of their life - or that of their companion. This debt is not really perceived as a burden since Chewbacca and Han become best friends. The debt is never painted in a poor light and it doesn't really come across as something that Han ever hold over Chewbacca's head.

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters: Jabba the Hutt #1 has the creative team of Justina Ireland, Luca Pizzari, Ibraim Roberson, Giada Marchisio, Edgar Delgado, and Vc Ariana Maher. This issue shows that debts to Jabba the Hutt are nothing like Chewbacca's life debt. Jabba expects to collect on them, but only on his terms, which bounty hunter Deva Lompop can attest to.

Deva owes Jabba a blood debt, which the Hutt reveals to Boba Fett when asked about being able to trust her. While it is unknown exactly how this debt was incurred, it becomes clear quickly that Jabba's debts are hard to pay off. Han Solo's financial debts to him are nothing compared to what Deva owes. This issue reveals that she has been called in multiple times as a result of her debt - yet Jabba never calls it square because he continually backs out of it being repaid. The job she pulls with Boba Fett is the fourth instance where Deva Lompop believes she can finally repay the debt - without any resolution. This is especially true since he has already sent her on another with no end in sight.

Jabba's blood debts seem to be never-ending as he is never satisfied with the results of the bounty hunts he sends Deva on. He will likely be sending her on numerous other tasks without ending her debt. This makes it unsurprising that she is actively trying to find a way to kill Jabba and forcefully end it. While finding someone to do the job doesn't seem highly possible, Deva isn't beyond getting her own hands dirty. This path may be dangerous, but it seems like the only one left to her if she ever wants to have her freedom back. With Jabba, debt is not only binding - it is everlasting in the worst way. Chewbacca's debt in Star Wars might last a lifetime, but Han would never play his friend the way Jabba the Hutt plays his bounty hunters.
