Over the course of its sprawling Skywalker saga, the spin off films, and the various animated series that have been produced, Star Wars has introduced viewers everywhere to a fully immersive universe populated by beloved and captivating characters. In recent years, the franchise has begun to focus on certain characters in particular, producing spin off films and series to explore characters like Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Cassian Andor.

There are plenty of other characters in the franchise so far who could be deserving of their own spin offs, whether television shows or cinematic feature films. But there are also definitely characters who don't need the spin off treatment. Here, we've recapped five who need them, and five who really do not.

Hope: Mon Mothma

There are certain characters from the Star Wars franchise who we know very little about, but have managed to become iconic in their own right regardless. The early Galactic Senator and Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma is one such character.

Glimpsed in the original trilogy, deleted scenes from the prequels, the animated series, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Mon Mothma is a character the franchise continues to return to, and for good reason. As an early strong female presence in the series, Mon Mothma offers a unique perspective on the happenings in the galaxy, and the Star Wars universe would be better off for exploring her in greater depth.

Don't: Qi'ra

Qira and Han in Solo

Solo: A Star Wars Story was a movie that was plagued by problems during production, and ultimately proved both polarizing among fans and underwhelming at the box office. For that reason, it wouldn't make much sense for the franchise to afford any of the main characters introduced in this movie a spin off film or series of their own - least of all Emilia Clarke's totally forgettable Qi'ra.

While it was interesting to see the franchise introduce its first real quasi villainous female character, Clarke's performance in the role was totally disappointing and rang hollow on all fronts.

Hope: Yoda

There is no single character in the Star Wars universe who has a greater breadth of knowledge and experience than everyone's favorite tiny Jedi Master, Master Yoda. Utterly iconic and emblematic of Star Wars as a whole since his first appearance in Empire Strikes Back, Yoda is one of the most beloved characters in the entirety of the saga.

It would only make sense, then, for the franchise to tap into both his beloved status, as well as his immense knowledge and hundreds of years of life to explore his story in more detail. Whether that means a series of films or a television series, we're not picky. We just want more of this lovable little guy.

Don't: Poe Dameron

Star Wars 7 - Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and his X-Wing

The Resistance hasn't exactly been the most compelling part of the sequel trilogy in any measure, and certainly nowhere near as exciting and interesting as the Rebellion of the original trilogy. A large part of that problem resides squarely upon the shoulders of Oscar Isaac's lukewarm, hot-headed pilot Poe Dameron.

From day one, Poe has been little more than a placeholder character, a walking plot device saddled with stock personality traits in The Force Awakens and offensive ones in The Last Jedi. He might be a hero in name, but he's certainly not heroic enough to lead his own spin off.

Hope: Leia Organa

Few characters have become truly representative of Star Wars as a whole in the way that Carrie Fisher's Princess, and now General, Leia Organa has. While the future of Star Wars, including even The Rise of Skywalker, has been irrevocably changed by Carrie Fisher's tragic passing, it's clear that the legacy of Leia's character will be never ending.

Given the rich backstory of Leia's character and her life before A New Hope as the princess of Alderaan and daughter of Bail and Breha Organa, it would make perfect sense for the franchise to explore her youth and adolescence in a spin off series all her own.

Don't: Luke Skywalker

Regardless of what some fans felt about Luke's journey in The Last Jedi, it's clear that Luke Skywalker's story has already been told. While Leia makes sense to receive a backstory focused spinoff of her own, there's no way that a movie or series about Luke's time as a moisture farmer on Tatooine would be anywhere near as compelling.

Likewise, a spin off movie or series about the intervening time between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens would be unsatisfactory, and feel ultimately redundant after all that The Last Jedi already revealed.

Hope: Lando Calrissian

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in Han Solo movie

As we've already discussed, Solo: A Star Wars Story was a movie that was middling at best, no matter what perspective you're coming from. But one thing that is also very clear is that Donald Glover's interpretation of the iconic Billy Dee Williams character Lando Calrissian was absolutely pitch perfect, and something that fans are eager for more of.

Some fans have been campaigning for a sequel to Solo, which seems unlikely at this point in time. But the real sequel of spin offs that should be put into production are additional movies, or even a series, focusing on Glover's Lando, who is a true star in the making.

Don't: Jyn Erso

Jyn Erso stands next to a grid of green lights in Star Wars Rogue One

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was yet another of the Star Wars spin off films that didn't feel entirely necessary to the overall story of the saga, even though it may have provided some information that made A New Hope make more sense. With that said, the film did include some truly compelling and vibrant characters.

However, the film's protagonist, Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso, was decidedly not one of them. While the film's other lead character, Diego Luna's Cassian Andor, is receiving a spin off series on Disney+, Jyn was never once as interesting or fully developed a character, and therefore, a spin off focusing on her would ultimately be entirely unsatisfactory.

Hope: Young Ben Solo

Ben Solo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The sequel trilogy has introduced plenty of engaging and fascinating characters, but none of them have as rich and truly untapped backstory to dig into as the man now known as Kylo Ren, formerly Ben Solo. As the son of galactic legends Han Solo and Leia Organa, a young Ben Solo had a truly unique experience growing up, one filled with both struggles and triumph.

Whether chronicling his childhood as the son of galactic icons, or digging further into his troubled years under Luke's tutelage, any potential spin off would include plenty of richly emotional and riveting material, and potentially some of the deepest character beats in any Star Wars work.

Don't: Darth Vader

Darth Vader in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

This might be one of the more controversial choices on this list, but it's true, Darth Vader's story has been told again, and again, and again, and honestly, it should be over and done with now. With the end of the Skywalker saga approaching, it's time to put the stories of the Sith Lord formerly known as Anakin Skywalker to rest once and for all.

Vader may have been a villain who loomed large once upon a time, but with the underwhelming prequels that revealed his backstory already serving as a spin off in their own right, there's no need to revisit any part of Vader's story anymore - even though they likely will.
